canonically, this still will have a lot of explaining to do. fremen are conditioned from (very) early childhood not to waste any water. that's why it's a big deal when Paul gives moisture to the dead - they're in awe of it because they can't do it. it's an inhibition not easily overcome.

Just made this connection and I love it. Origin of "to decide:" decidere is a latin verb composed of the prefix de- (meaning "off" or "down") and caedere ("to cut") Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife - chopping off what's incomplete and saying: 'Now, it's complete because it's ended here.'

offtopic: I was a bit concerned that the Odyssey movie is coming out too soon after the latest adaptation. I've now looked it up: the Hallmark TV miniseries (which I remember enjoying) came out in 1997... then again, Ralph Fiennes's The Return was only 2 years ago.

part of the reason I fell in love with Dune is the quiet and subtle world-building. e.g. Duncan deduces that Leto II must've banned shields because of the lasgun-shield interactions and the ban on atomics - but readers can realize it's because sandworms will go berserk and Leto is part sandworm now

an anagram for Paul Atreides is “ideal pasture” - which makes perfect sense because he promises to turn Dune into a green paradise then again, you can also arrange the letters as “diaper salute” so what do i know 🫡
