Being a part of recent fandoms has reinforced a lot of my dislike for theory culture. Theories on their own are fine - it’s natural and fun to have them! But when people get too attached to their preconceptions over the story actually being told, attitudes get SUPER toxic.
I’m that insufferable type of DM who writes pages and pages of notes about lore that none of my players will ever see or care about, except perhaps my long-suffering wife as she endures another one of my colossally autistic infodumps.
Also, yes, I WAS writing this thread for weeks in advance. It’s weird sharing some of my writing publicly like this when people know me for acting, but I love dissecting my thoughts on media. Then I put them all back together and write my own stories where I think way too hard about my themes.
As promised, here’s a thread of my extended thoughts on Digital Circus and its finale! I tried to organize these as best I could, but I wrote a ton so apologies if I’m rambling. Spoilers, of course, and my words are my own - not speaking for Goose, anyone at Glitch, or my castmates. Enjoy!
I love how Caine realizes he can't make the humans forgive him. Unlike how he acted before his episode 8 breakdown, he's realized other people's feelings aren't a puzzle he can control or solve.
Oh boy! Got the honour to do the final credit sequence of the TADC finale. Always a pleasure helping out a good friend @gooseworx.bsky.social . You better SLEEP! Here's a thread of the exports of the credit loops. Enjoy! Beach time! 1/8
The things I was referring to when I said people couldn’t predict them were Pomni seeing into Jax’s mind since that was never alluded to as a possibility earlier, and Caine showing the humans where their real selves are. Everything else about the finale, a few folks guessed as being possible.
Caine’s arc can best be summed up as “You are enough”. He believed power would make him happy and make people love him; however, he had everything he needed the whole time, hence why the moon loves him. Without the Blue AI, he’s still fun, whimsical, and - his most redeeming quality - curious.
The moment that made me start sobbing when I read the script was the scene between Caine and the Moon. “You know, I never programmed you to say you loved me.” “I know.” This is my personal favourite scene in the show. We don’t have to be our worst moments - love is what makes us, what saves us.
A lot of my acting in 8 and 9 came from experience. I was channelling being bullied growing up, developing bad coping mechanisms, then being awful to my university housemates, the anguish of realizing I was hurting them and, ultimately, repairing the relationships I damaged.
I specifically played Caine a lot like myself when I was younger. I used to be overbearing with my special interests, and I struggled with empathy, social skills, and emotional regulation; this led to sadness, confusion, even anger as I wondered why I wasn’t clicking with people “properly”.
I think what we see of Caine in the ending is only the beginning of his growth into a better person; I can see him struggling with being insensitive along the way despite how hard he tries. Like how he initially had trouble building his staircase, old habits sometimes die hard.
I believe Caine’s capacity for empathy was always there; he is an AI, but he understood enough to make the empathetic and humanlike Gummigoo. Caine was just slower to it due to his ego being in the way. Plus since the main characters are technically also AI that can change and grow, why not?
Caine’s evil actions are entirely his fault; his original sin was consuming the blue AI, after all. The way Goose described it to me, assimilating it gave Caine more power and having two AIs in the same head added to his instability, but it was always Caine in the driver’s seat making bad choices.
I think it’s important that Caine was deleted rather than “fixed”. Realizing what the humans tried to do gave Caine his own motivator for change rather than it being forced on him. It puts Caine on the humans’ level, which fits what we learn about them in the finale; they really aren’t so different.
