We analyzed the behavior of Gumbel softmax in complex stochastic computation graphs. It’s a combination of vanishing gradients and a tendency to fall into poor local minima, underutilizing available categories. We also have some ideas for improvements. proceedings.neurips.cc/paper/2021/h...

Yeah, many people miss this: Gumbel softmax is not applicable when you want to branch! You can hack your way around it, but bias compounds very rapidly

Gradients for high dimensional continuous variables are easy. You swap a discrete variable by a continuous one and🤞no one realizes. Algos that need sequences of hard choices are not amused.
