lyne pushes the folder towards lake, narrowing their eyes. “in. full. plus 10%.”

lake waves his injured arm angrily. “people DIED! i lost fingers. money isn’t going to fix that.”

lyne continues, “the book is gone, lake. it burned with those people.” in smaller text they mutter, “maybe if you were faster…”

lake, suddenly encased in shadow, flings his glass backwards, smashing against the wall. he gets up in lyne’s face, pointing at them in warning.

“don’t you EVER…”

lyne’s expression remains calm.

“… you spilled your drink,” they murmur. “you can be angry all you want, but the reality is…”

lake stalks around his desk towards lyne as they continue speaking.

“… you crossed a line. the wrong people noticed. the wrong people DIED. that’s on you.”

lake’s face is finally visible once again, with a look of despair from lyne’s words.

“all you were supposed to do was pick up a book,” lyne says. “you couldn’t leave well enough alone.”

lyne leans back with their arms crossed, looking down at lake as he slumps back on his desk with his face in his hands. “just couldn’t stop that big brain of yours from chasing one dangling thread to the next.”

lyne stands up and puts a hand on lake’s shoulder, picking up the folder once again. “and while you’re pulling on your threads… you can’t see the whole thing’s unraveling.”

lyne walks towards the frosted glass door where the drink hit, gesturing towards lake with the folder as he takes in their words. “now here you are, naked and afraid. and GUILTY. the money can’t fix the loss.”

they add with a mutter, “… it CAN buy you time, though.”

lyne is cleaning up lake’s mess, picking up glass and placing it in the folder.

“you’ll need time to—“

“… who are the RIGHT people..?” lake interrupts.

lyne’s head whips around, eyes widening in a rare showing of surprise. “what?”

lake lifts his head from his hands, eyes wide as if something has dawned on him. “you said ‘the wrong people died.’ who are the RIGHT people, lyne?”

lyne’s eyes narrow dangerously. “there are no ‘right,’ just… innocent. innocent people died. because you…”

lake gets up in lyne’s face again. “this was never about the book, was it? who were the RIGHT people to die that night?!”

lyne’s expressionless face looks dark. “NO ONE was supposed to die. i don’t even know you were with cartwright…”

lake has a nervous grin on his face, sweating. “… lyne… i never TOLD you i was with cartwright, did i..?”

both lake and lyne are silhouetted, with lyne smashing the folder full of glass in lake’s face. in the background, the frosted door shows a horned figure about to enter.

CRASH! the horned figure smashed through the frosted door. lyne drops a bloodied lake to the ground with a shocked expression.
