A defining feature of patriarchal violence is that it isn’t just directed at women. It’s also directed at other men in power struggles to determine whose ideology should dominate. It is unsurprising that men who encourage violence to jockey for political power will find themselves subjected to it.

One of the biggest mistakes the left makes is that we accept Republicans’ wins. And most of the time, that means ceding ground that makes the next fight much, much harder to win too. We have to reject the idea of a lost cause. Especially when it comes to civil rights.

Musk throwing out Trump’s history of sexual violence is just another example of a man objectifying survivors for his own political gain. The only time any of these men think rape is wrong is when they suspect taking that stance will give them a competitive edge over another man.
