We got our first mulberry tree and I am THRILLED. I'm not interested in growing cherries because they're very susceptible to disease in my area, but mulberries are basically disease-free, they have a flavor in common with cherries, and many varieties ripen over a long period of time!!!!

I worry that a complete lack of coordinated recovery plan for the fires in Oregon is just opening another door for western juniper trees to carve a larger niche for themselves. Eroding soil, stalling the carbon cycle, and locking up the ecosystem's potential.
A lot of the mature and old growth stands of ponderosa pine forest that I had a personal connection to in Oregon have been burned in the last 2 years. All of them have, actually. Every single patch of old forest that I'd fantasize about taking friends to visit in my old stomping grounds are gone.
