Odyssey movie: fab special effects=consummate action movie obsessed with giants. Lacks moral clout: Nolan stuck in Oppenheimer (Odysseus delays homecoming as so guilty (!) after seeing suffering caused by wooden horse technofix). End Tennysonian-Odysseus (+Penny!) sails off "beyond the sunset" 4*

So this time the culprit book that got me detained at Edinburgh airport security was once again an Aristotle Loeb. This despite the signal on my new baseball cap that security staff should expect to find this author about my person

Christopher Anaforian passed his St Andrews PhD viva, which I examined, with flying colours yesterday. On US leftist mobilisations of classical authors, brilliantly supervised by my old comrade Henry Stead.

It's #InternationalJokeDay: In Euripides' darkest play, Trojan Women, when Hecuba begs Menelaus not to take Helen back on the same ship (in case she seduces him & escapes punishment), he just asks laconically (he's Laconian): "Why? Has she put on weight?" An obese Helen of Troy would sink the ship!

Aristotle beyond the Academy #2: A Punch cartoon (1912) illustrating the tradition that Alexander wrote about/sent to Aristotle the flora/fauna of India (Pliny NH 8.17.44), on the public radar after D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson's 1910 edition of Aristotle's "History of Animals"

Great to hear Tony's pretentious essay being gently demolished - as an example of the form, rather than for its content - by Michael Rosen and Classics Professor Edith Hall on BBC's Broadcasting House programme. Though in the process Michael manages to make clear his view of the content 😀

Our 25-y.o. has been stuck overnight in a tiny room at Erfurt airport with a planeful of @jet2 passengers trying to fly Preveza-Luton with hardly any food/water after emergency landing. STILL no clarity on when they will be flown back to England, or to which airport. @rickypo.bsky.social

Made it to the Thesprotian Oracle of the Dead today. No sign of Tiresias, Charon etc. Not telling you what other ghosts I raised. As you age the numbers of beloved residents of Hades accumulate

Magdalena Zira and I, who sat for the portrait on the right in 500 BCE, are thrilled by the cover of our book forthcoming in September, including image by the incomparable Yiorgos Tsangaris. Thanks to all involved.

Oxford friends! I tried to write a factual docudrama biography of Medea, having visited all the sites where she lived and murdered, and will be talking about it on a Saturday morning next autumn in a bookshop near you. Please come!
