A5a: I’m going to talk about games here. When it comes to mechanics, you don’t want to leave it to readers/players to figure it out. Rules need to be clear, if only to prevent fights at the table over what happens if moonbeam is cast in a three-story building. 1/2 #StetChat

Q5: When working with your clients, how do you suggest balancing complex information/explanations with trusting the reader? How does this show up in the type of material you work on? #StetChat

A4a: You can include references to other cultures, but you need to do your research first. Skimming a Wikipedia article isn’t enough, especially if you hope to depict a culture that is frequently exoticized or othered. Your best bet is to hire a sensitivity editor from that culture. 1/3 #StetChat

A3a: When I work on a game that discusses a lot of locations but doesn’t provide a map, I’ll often sketch one out to refer to as I work to ensure consistency (you’d be surprised at how often a city swaps from east to west). So, when the creator has a map ready to go, I’m thrilled. 1/2 #StetChat

A2: I love a good chart in a TTRPG. Often, a chart is the perfect thing when laying out currency, weapon types, character abilities, magical items, etc. What’s great about a chart is that it serves as an easy reference point for players to refer to when playing. #StetChat

Hi, my name is Rachel and I'm a freelance copyeditor, proofreader, and developmental editor of TTRPGs, comics, and manga. I occasionally write things, mostly either about editing or tabletop roleplaying games. I'm also the brainstormer in chief for #StetChat!

Meet the editors behind #StetChat: @carolinavonkampen.com, founder and host @raqueledits.bsky.social, creative director @editrix-rachel.bsky.social, brainstormer in chief

Graphic that reads: The editors behind #StetChat. Carolina VonKampen (she/her), founder and host. Raquel Brown (she/they), creative director. Rachel Lapidow (she/her), brainstormer in chief.

Talking about the AirBnB my in-laws recently stayed at to my husband. Me: I wasn't very impressed. Him: It seemed fine. Me: You're not judgmental enough! Him: Oh, okay. I think you could give my husband a tent and a sleeping bag, and he'd be pretty cool with it. I'm definitely the pickier one.

It doesn't matter how well you, the author, understands the mechanics of your game if that information doesn't end up on the page. This is one of the biggest reasons to hire an editor. They'll be able to read the text and say, "This isn't clear. I don't know what to do here." 1/2

Oh man, I need to do something similar. I have a box full of receipts and mail that needs to be sorted, recycled, or shredded. Where is the paperless future we were promised? #StetSprint

Happy Tuesday! I'm hosting our #StetSprint today, and during the next hour I'm going to be doing some admin organization! (In addition to the digital stuff, I've got a pile of papers on my desk I've got to sort between "keep" and "toss" 😅)

In tonight's episode of Murder, She Wrote, "Broadway Malady," Vivian Blaine plays Rita Bristol, a golden age Hollywood legend who's due to be in a Broadway revival. I imagine that the note she gave her hairdresser was, "round." The '80s was not a good decade for hair.

Vivian Blaine, as Rita Bristol, is an older white woman with reddish hair that's in a very curly, and very round up-do. She has her hands on her hips and seems displeased.

anthropic, lightly stealing a couple of my books: jess let us take all of what you've written get out of the way and don't resist me, my eyes enormous, flames shooting up behind me: YOU STEAL FROM ME? YOU STEAL FROM ME LIKE A BUFFET? OH! OH! PERDITION AND FLAMES FOR YOU! FOR ONE THOUSAND YEARS!

Even for things like knitting projects, I like to know what I'm going to make and what pattern I'm going to use. Before I go on a trip, I generally will plan out at least two knitting projects to take with me! One or both was likely already underway. #StetSprint

#StetSprint | I enjoy it with things that don't have deadlines and / or that people aren't paying me to do (traveling recreationally, for example). But if I have to get X done by Y date, you better hope I have a plan or it's probably not gonna happen! 😜

Jesse, please eat! You can come back at the end or just attend our #StetSprint next Tuesday. It's hard to edit well when you're hungry, tired, or distracted.

Hi #edibuddies and #StetChat For today's #StetSprint, I'll be a bit distracted at first because I'm starving and I need to eat 😅 But I'm hoping to work a little on a blog post for my website. Might do a half sprint today instead of the full hour (I'm late anyway).
