“Is it weird?” Ed asked quietly. “The way we are? The way we...need each other?”

“I don’t know. You’re the only I’ve ever wanted this way. Needed with such urgency. Adored this much.”

“Argh.” Ed made his abashed-but-pleased sounds again, tucking kisses into Stede’s neck.

Stede was about to skim a hand down to Ed’s waist when Ed went on.

“It feels...overwhelming, in a good way. Like I feel so much that even holding you or kissing you isn’t enough sometimes.”

“I reckon because... Well, we both spent a long time without having something this good.”

“Yeah. But for some people, I reckon they only feel this way when it’s still new. And, look, if we ever did fall out of love— I’m not saying it’ll happen!” He stopped Stede’s protest with two fingers to his lips. “I’m not. But Iz, one time... It was after he’d led me to believe that my only worth lay in being the Kraken. That, worth or not, that was all I’d ever be. And after months of that, he’d finally realised that maybe a talent show might’ve been a good idea after all.”

“I know,” Stede said gently. “You’ve both talked it through, properly.”

“Yeah, but... I was doing a lot of rhino horn, then. I missed stuff at the time, and some of it’s only coming back to me now. I think, one time, Iz said he...had love for me.”

Stede wrinkled his nose. “Is that how he phrased it?”

“Well, yeah. It’s Iz. I blew him off. And I’ve just remembered it, but I don’t know what he meant. Brothers in arms? Blackbeard being a legend we’d both started? Izzy now would never sell us out to the English, but he’d done it then, so what kind of love could he have meant? We’ve never mentioned it— Like you said, we’ve talked through it all and things are good now.

“My point is, at that time, we’d both lost our respect for each other. And I want you to promise, even if our love becomes bent out of shape like that, promise me we won’t do that to each other That you’ll still respect me. Even if everything about me annoys and disgusts you.”

Stede had three different responses ready to trip off his tongue—Izzy loves you the way all the crew do; I’d never lose my respect for you; nothing about you disgusts me—but at Ed’s last words, he understood what Ed was driving at. “Oh, you mean like Anne and Mary still do! Wait. Do they respect each other?”

“They do, in their own way. Anne’s never tried to make anyone else jealous the way she does with Mary. She really jumped on you, huh?”

“Yes, it was quite the eye opener.” He remembered the weight of her on his lap. “I’d never kissed anyone else besides Mary—and you...”

“And?” Sparks glinted in the depths of Ed’s eyes.
