Subject matter aside, this film was a massive inflection point in film. Originally called “Boy Rents Girl,” people showed no interest in going. Someone (a marketing exec?) had the idea to buy the rights to “Can’t Buy Me Love” and suddenly it tested huge and launched the idea of the “pre-sold” title.

The film CAN'T BUY ME LOVE did a great job showing this. If the coolest kid in school likes something nerdy, the nerdy thing becomes cool.

Just saw The Christophers tonight and I loved it--Soderbergh working in the service of an exceptionally sharp, witty, original, adult screenplay by Ed Solomon and performances by Ian McKellen (spectacular!) and Michaela Coel that, like the script, deserve to be remembered at year's end. Do not miss.
