Every September, I test my 2021 statistical prediction against summer temperatures at De Bilt. Since 1976, the station shows a tight trend of +0.034°C/year. In terms of equivalent geographical displacement, the Dutch summer has effectively migrated south to Central France over this period. 🇳🇱➡️🇫🇷 #KNMI

This comparison of today's Sentinel-1 satellite data with data recorded before the dramatic Tibet-Nepal flood shows the changes in the likely source area. In the coming days, we can expect InSAR-based estimates of the volumes of displaced rock and ice.

According to the UNESCO Tsunami Programme there is a 100% chance of a tsunami of at least 1 meter in height occurring in the Mediterranean in the next 30-50 years [1]. The French centre for tsunami alerts (CENALT) has a 15 minute warning window to send an alert message to the authorities [2]. 1/4

Earlier today a moderate size earthquake (M 5.0) has been recorded by the seismometer at Saba airport (Northern Leeward islands at 2 deg. distance). Within a radius of 15 km 6 smaller quakes occurred of which 2 M4.0 preceeded the M5.0 quake. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...
Is global warming accelerating? A paper in this months Geophysical Research Letters hit the headlines. The authors observe through detailed statistical analysis and adjustments for known effects (e.g. El Niño, volcanism) a statistically significant acceleration of global warming. 1/4

On the 15th of January at 15:28 local time (UTC time +1) a likely gas explosion caused several buildings to collapse in the historic centre of Utrecht. Luckily only 4 persons suffered minor injuries. It was clear though that people were shocked and didn't not now the best respond.
The perimeter ABCD on REM data near Ermelo is interpreted as a Roman camp [1] although its dimensions are suspiciously close to metric (AB=201m, BC=299m). On the original data it is hard to see if 1930s forest roads cut the ditch and bank. Optical dating results are expected early this year. #Roman

During the Quasi-war (1797-1801) French privateers took American vessels. The disputed legality of this privateering resulted in court cases running well into the 20th century. Similarly, the U.S.A. may be in morally and legally troubled waters due to strikes against vessels in international waters.
For #hillfortswednesday a rampart hiding in plane sight: The Appelse Walburg dates from +/-11th century AD in an area ruled by the counts of Hamaland. The "Hunneschans" (Gelderland) is thought to be linked to 10th century AD iron production under control of the counts of Hamaland. Archaeological finds (flint tools and burial mounts) are mainly from the Late Mesolithic and Mid-Neolithic, with limited finds from later periods. #hillfortswednesday

We have upgraded our geomagnetic forecast today (12 November 2025) to the highest intensity level amid an ongoing solar storm. Current predictions suggest that the activity will result in potentially the largest solar storm to hit our planet in over two decades.
In the Netherlands when people contemplate climate impact they tend to look out to the sea, or over their shoulders to the rivers. It may be prudent though to start looking at the sky!
In 1976 Courtillot and Le Mouël [1] noted the occurrence of geomagnetic jerks. A jerk is a relative sudden change in the 2nd derivative of the geomagnetic field with respect to time. If such a behaviour would occur in a time series, what would be an appropriate statistical method to detect it?
Amazing that this became so relevant 2 months later!
