There's nothing that man fears more than the touch of the unknown. He wants to see what's reaching towards him and to be able to recognize or at least classify it. Man always tends to avoid physical contact with anything strange First lines Crowds & Power

"You do everything to increase the consciousness of death. You magnify the danger, which is great as it is, in order not to lose your sense of it. You are the opposite of a person who takes drugs, your knowledge of horror is never allowed a rest" The Secret Heart Of The Clock, Elias Canetti, 1985.

"Why have I dwelt on the reception of this strange, long, and weirdly organized book? I believe that the present crises in America invigorate its claims. Crowds and Power offers formulations that are eerily prescient". share.google/zhQ8bk2Lm5zV...

Here a crucial aspect of what Canetti called 'acoustic mask' only in one word combined with 'command'. Strange sounds in a word: the difficulty to pronounce it right. This rigidness is mask-like, stringent as a command: to speak it crystal clear is tuff, it needs repetition of imitation.

“The drama lives in its own peculiar way in language. One could almost say … the drama lives in language and, consequently, I consider the acoustic mask to be the most important element of the dramatic structure" Elias Canetti. "This intellectual drama crossed with a Shakespearean history play".

"Les hommes sont des mystiques de la mort dont il faut se méfier" Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Homage à Zola, uitgesproken in 1933. Scherpzinnige waarneming van Céline: fascinatie voor de dood, 't mystiek maken ervan, is niet ongevaarlijk. Dit citaat had in Canetti's Boek Tegen De Dood moeten staan.

Er is net een handboek verschenen over Veza & Elias Canetti. Mooi uitgegeven. Voorin een lange lijst met academici. Wirkung? Achterin een personenregister. Marshall McLuhan, Deleuze & Guattari, Andreas Mubi Brighenti, Eno & Byrne etc worden niet genoemd. Genoemden zijn beïnvloed door Canetti. 🙈

1/7) Canetti: "Commands are older than speech". Andrea Mubi Brighenti in And Canetti in Social Theory: "Commands appear tautological, self-referential, non-argumentative, to begin with. There is not much to say about them. ~>
