Professor of Sociology, INVEST Research Flagship Centre, University of Turku. Research interests intergenerational social inequality, education, children of immigrants

I gave my inaugural lecture yesterday after a year as a professor. I talked about children of immigrants and intergenerational inequality. I also professed my love for sociology. Thanks to all who attended – as well as everyone who has supported me along the way! I hope to pay it forward. ❤️

💚 “What I love about sociology is that phenomena can be examined on so many levels – through individuals’ characteristics, family background, communities, and societal structures,” our professor @elinakilpi.bsky.social said in her inaugural lecture at @utu.fi. Thank you for a wonderful lecture!

Excited to be starting this new Nordic collaboration on young people’s wellbeing, learning and educational trajectories with colleagues in Aarhus, Helsinki and Gothenburg and continuing with @davidreimer.bsky.social. Juuso Repo in an important role in getting this started!

Our OG-style social mobility article (loglinear models, occ classes, etc…) for Finnish 1951-1980 birth cohorts is finally out! Publishing this article is also an emotional experience, as Lucia passed away unexpectedly in March while the article was still under review. We miss her quite a bit.

🚨 NEW ARTICLE 🚨 Lucia Ruggera, @elinakilpi.bsky.social & @janierola.net show that for cohorts 1951-1980 educational inequalities have decreased for both men and women in Finland while returns to education only decreased for men, not women. Open access 👇 doi.org/10.1177/0001... #sociology #econsky
