The lilies made me nauseous.
They were crammed everywhere, in every possible space they could be-bunched in tall vases by the altar, wrapped around the ends of pews in limp white ribbon. White petals drenched in the purpling glow of sun rays beaming through stained glass.
Bullshit. All of it was bullshit. She hated lilies. Sure, maybe her hatred was practically unknown to anyone but me, and half-baked at best, but that didn't matter on a day like this.
Daria deserved flowers she actually liked.
Purple azaleas were her favorite. It felt wrong to get into the habit of saying were because to me, she died the Daria she'd always been, and that girl would live on in my head. Didn't that make her alive? In some fucked up phantom memory kind of way?
That idea felt much better than the truth because the truth hadn't set in fully, somehow.
Three nights ago, my best friend went for a swim at Briar Lake, and today I sat front row at her funeral.
