In fact, when I talked to the children's librarian at my local library, she referred to the nonfiction section as where "books go to die." She was thrilled to hear this isn't the case in my classroom.

Guess who is nominated for new teacher of the year?
One of the kids in my after school book club came up to me and said: Mr. Blackwell, the kids from book club have started their own book club at recess to talk about the book we're reading. I was thrilled to hear how excited the kids are about book club this year.
I just had a mother message me with a photo of her son reading the book from our book club at home. She said she'd never seen her son so excited about a book. This is exactly why I started book club last year. I want to pass on my love, joy and enthusiasm for reading to kids.

The only homework I assign is for a student to read for 20 minutes each night. Today a few of my students told me "Mr. Blackwell. We can't do this. We don't have any books at home." Nor do their parents take them to the library. That's why books in my classroom are so critical.
For some kids, the books they get in book club are the only ones they have at home. Thank you to anyone who donates. You are helping them love and get excited about reading.
