El Nino continues in Monterey. Yesterday I saw juvenile Garibaldi, Rockwrasse and Kelp Bass, all southern California species.....

I work on fish molecular ecology. I like to dive, sail, fly, rock climb, and motorcycles. But mostly, I like fish.... 🇮🇹 🇫🇷
El Niño must be starting showing up. I went diving in Monterey today and saw Southern California fishes everywhere. Most importantly, juvenile Garibaldi. First time I see one in more than 30 years of diving here.
Fish counts in Moorea just finished. Our 22nd year of monitoring. Under the skillful leadership of Andy Brooks. With Deron Burkepile and Tom Adam.
Thank you Don Danko and Cichlid News for having me as an author with my article about teaching classes in Lake Malawi. Field classes are life changing for many students. Doing it in Malawi has been a dream of mine for decades, and I feel so privileged for being able to do it.
A few fishes and a huge Triton from today's dive. Kona, Big Island, with Erik Stockdale.
In my last paper on the genome of Garibaldi, I made a point in thanking @physaliacourses.bsky.social for their continued support for my own education, and for research in general. What a fantastic resource! (No, they did not pay me to say all this... 😅)
Iconic California fish, iconic Italian historical figure and namesake Garibaldi. genomics and body color. I could not resist. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
How Garibaldi Got Its Red Coat: The Genome of Hypsypops rubicundus, a Conspicuous Fish of the Northeastern Pacific Kelp Forests
Coloration in fishes plays central roles in communication, defense, and sexual selection, and is mediated by specialized pigment cells (chromatophores). In many species, red and orange hues derive fr...

The natural history of Mt Kilimanjaro is probably what surprised me the most in our recent climb.
Fish in a fish market, and a few hours later, fish in a fish talk. How nice!!! Fish meetings, La Paz, Colombia.
Visit to the local fish market in Valledupar, Colombia, with my host Jose Tavera.
One of the best poster venues ever. Out in the breeze. La Paz, ichthyology meetings, Colombia.
The ichthyology meetings in La Paz, Colombia, are on!!!
A few years back, a very unexpected relationship was found between Cichlids and convict fish. We have now explored this relationship further, and found that it might not be nearly as clear as once thought..... (photo by Ian Roussopoulos) www.sciencedirect.com/.../pii/S105....
I have just spent a month teaching a field class in Corsica, what a treat! and a few fishes....
You know what is better than an ichthyologist? Two ichthyologists in a plane! Thank you @fishguy.bsky.social this was the best birthday present I could have.
Our new paper on population genomics of black surfperch. I am incredibly happy, decades in the making.... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Population Genomics, Local Adaptation and Cryptic Speciation in a Temperate Reef Fish, the Black Surfperch, Embiotoca jacksoni, Using Genome‐Wide Resequencing
The black surfperch, Embiotoca jacksoni , exhibits limited dispersal due to its lack of a pelagic larval stage and offers a unique model for studying local adaptation and potential cryptic speciation...

A Mom Amphiprion maohiensis and a baby (most likely not hers, although there is some self-recruitment....)
Fun to take a picture yesterday of the newly described Amphiprion maohiensis in Moorea.
New anemonefish species alert! After many years working with this species, we finally also described it as a the Polynesian Anemonefish. zookeys.pensoft.net/article/1414...
A new species of Anemonefish from French Polynesia, Amphiprion maohiensis, (Pomacentridae, Amphiprioninae), the Polynesian anemonefish
Anemonefishes (Teleostei, Pomacentridae) comprise approximately 28 species of damselfishes that exclusively live symbiotically with sea anemones. Distribution ranges vary, with some species only found...

Malawi is said to be the warm heart of Africa and it really is….
The lilac-breasted roller is a very common bird in Kruger. Yet, it is magnificent....
Today I got a chance to visit Sterkfontein caves. There, I found a collection of classic casts. I tried to recreate from memory a super famous picture of Richard Leakey holding a fossil found by his mother, Mary (nutcracker man) and a fossil he found (Turkana boy). I know this is nerdy and silly..
This is as timely as it gets. I start teaching my field class in Southern Africa tomorrow! Brilliant paper! www.science.org/doi/epdf/10....
Introgression dynamics of sex-linked chromosomal inversions shape the Malawi cichlid radiation
Chromosomal inversions can contribute to adaptive speciation by linking coadapted alleles. By querying 1375 genomes of the species-rich Malawi cichlid fish radiation, we discovered five large inversio...
