Europe can build a lot of renewables without getting into grid issues. What’s also worth noting here is that private investors must have known this all along. That this hasn’t yet happened means there are barriers to investment beyond the grid.
Very interesting. Build wind and solar next to hydro plants. The grid is already there and goes underutilised for much of the day.
Now that millions of electric vehicles have been on the road for a decade or more, we have the data to check in on how their batteries are holding up. Quite well, it turns out.
EV Batteries Are Defying Expectations After Hundreds of Thousands of Miles
Industry experts think newfound knowledge of battery durability is a game-changer for consumer confidence in EVs.

This is a rather weird fourth. I fell in love with America, the country where it doesn’t matter where you are from. It saddens me how much we’ve regressed, but I also believe that that America as an idea is still alive.
Least-cost electrification plans have become more sophisticated. This working paper proposes an integrated regulatory–financial framework. Universal access becomes bankable when planning, regulation and financing are integrated. ceepr.link/4lc8Ysm
TODAY: New York City’s entire electric grid just got about 20% more renewable power. That’s because it’s the first day the CHPE transmission project is sending commercial power to New York City's electric grid. 👏👏👏 Lower prices! Less pollution! HUGE!
Hi everyone! I'm new to Bluesky. I'm an economist who studies growth, political polarization and the environment. Here are recent summaries of some of the things I'm working on: Long-run growth patterns and their implications: guidedcivicrevival.substack.com/p/regular-ec...
Regular economic development patterns with seismic implications
Global economic development has progressed with several highly regular patterns for more than half a century. These patterns may change, but their implications deserve much more attention and respect.

In response to Trump's War in Iran, the European Commission this week published a proposal to amend the EU's CO2 price. The problem is that the proposed changes are exactly backward: they degrade the long term CO2 price with little to nor relief in the short term. 🤦♂️ ec.europa.eu/commission/p...

Oh I know this one! Trump has always wanted his name attached to stuff right?
That men reading in public is vilified as "performative" is idiotic. Books are good y'all.

Kier Starmer: "What gives us control is renewables. Our own home-grown energy which is then more secure and more independent. That’s why I think we should go further and faster on renewables. Let’s get control of our own energy…so we don’t have to keep worrying that our bills are going to go up"
Electricity markets suffer from a missing market problem that is hindering decarbonization but remains poorly understood. So it's good to see this good non-academic read on the topic, and Australia is a good case study for understanding it better. inflectionpoints.work/articles/rew...

Australia’s National Electricity Market is a marvel of moment-to-moment operation. But it lacks the tools required to spur long-term energy growth.

As EU lawmakers are looking to soften the continent's CO2 price, it's worth remembering that policy makers can overcome political constraints by complementing CO2 pricing with subsidies without sacrificing much economic efficiency, as I and @knittelmit.bsky.social show here: doi.org/10.1016/j.en...
