This makes me so happy. 25 yrs ago when I was 11, I did a sea turtle rehab summer camp at the MarineLife Ctr.The turtle numbers were nothing like that then. That experience made a huge impact on me & still does-I've loved sea turtles ever since & still want to be a marine biologist when I grow up!🦑🧪

Birds in North America will no longer be named after people. The American Ornithological Society announced the move Wednesday.

i'd like to see wobblin' hawk (swainson's) and bonneted/chapeud warbler (wilson's). also while we're at it we should rename the robin to american thrush

currently discussing re-naming the vireos in a group chat I'm in. I propose bell's vireo be the Shrubby Vireo (or White-Spectacled Vireo), Cassin's can be Cinereous Vireo. Hutton's can be Kinglet Vireo. Yeah yeah?

I've started to realize a lot of my fav science writers are birders or have become birders *cough* @edyong209.bsky.social *cough* & it makes me happy. Clearly being a writer & appreciating birds goes hand in hand, no? (as I say this to myself in hopes of writing in less academia-stuffy spaces...)

My vote is that we take the lead after whoever was responsible for naming the majority of hummingbirds. I want more sunbeams and brilliants on my life list 😉

Rivoli's Hummingbird back to MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD This was a great name that never should have reverted to the old version. If the AOS kept Canada Goose when Cackling split, they should have kept Magnificent when they split Talamanca. macaulaylibrary.org/photo/102575...
