Editor of LabourList. Playwright. Cool aunt.
Went dancing last night. The arm above my head is the previously broken one. Watch me wave it in the air like I just don’t care!
Anyway I wrote about the nonsense that too many journalists are spouting that any overturning of Thatcherism inevitably means we're going back to the 1970s. share.google/rxx552kP8NFY...
Back to the future? - LabourList
In reversing the 80s econoic settlement, Labour isn't going back to the 1970s, but forward to an economy that works for the 2020s and beyond.

Just told the cat she's "biscuit rich even if she's Dreamie poor" and I think I might need a holiday..
Labour promised a National Care Service in its manifesto. Burnham has long wanted to deliver this. Could now finally be the time we actually manage this. I look at the history and politcs of this fraught issue: labourlist.org/2026/07/time...
Time to care - LabourList
Social care has been one of the trickiest issues for governments of all parties. But if Burnham can deliver, it will be transformational.

I wrote from the heart about some of the reaction to Ann Widdecombe's death and why hate is so corrosive to progressive politics. labourlist.org/2026/07/my-p...
My political opponent is not my enemy - LabourList
Ann Widdecombe campaigned for things that were anathema to me. I hope my politics wins. But I refuse to weaken that politics by dehumanising it with hate.

Count Binface is a minor smile-raising example of English eccentricity. But the right wing overreaction to him is hilarious comedy gold.

Genuinely sad about Penelope Keith. Margo was a bloody legendary character.

Nigel Farage, Tim Montgomerie, Richard Tice… Your boy took a hell of a beating!
Today Makerfield has the chance to vote for hope. All Labour members should be ‘Clause One Socialists’ – we must hope like hell and fight like hell to win this election. We'll deal with what comes next tomorrow. My LabourList latest:
This is not a normal by-election - LabourList
The Makerfield by-election will have consequences far beyond Andy Burnham winning or losing the seat. And not just for Labour.

Took an actual day off before…well whatever comes next. Took myself to the Zoo!
Anyone who knows me, knows I am a bit of a local government geek. So I am thrilled that we have a new weekly feature highlighting the work Labour is doing in councils across the country.
📣 🌹 LABOUR DELIVERING IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT! Labour is still in power and making a difference in council across the country. Our brand new weekly feature tells stories from up and down the country of local Labour delivery.
I have a student son Henry Nowak’s age & I can’t imagine what it took for his family to respond outside court with the grace they did, asking that their son’s death not be used for division and hate. That Reform & Restore chose to throw that back in their faces makes me feel sick.

Having been through unemployment in my own youth I know the damage it does to a person not just financially but in terms of confidence and mental health. That is why the Milburn Review is so important. labourlist.org/2026/05/milb...
The Milburn Review exposes a generational crisis - LabourList
Changing the fortunes of young people not in employment, eduction or training could be Labour's defining mission. But it will take whole system change that will ask hard questions of all of us.
