A huge influx of people of the past few days so HELLO! I'm Emme, modeller of marine habitats, mother of BathyCam, and lover of all things benthic 🤎 Thinking about starting a body doubling video call writing group (NE 🇨🇦) in mid Feb - anyone up for it? 🐙 🦑 🧪

Wouldn't it be cool if digitised sponge collections like this could include in-situ, freshly collected and spicule images! The world needs more taxonomists!!
Smithsonian NMNH Invertebrate Zoology has been digitizing coral specimens using photogrammetry. And the 3-D visualizations are available online. Recently, some sponges have been added the collection, including this holotype of Sigmadocia recondita. 3d.si.edu/explore?edan... digitizing #marinelife
look at this cute polychaete!! I love being on cruises when it's my job to just pick and sort stuff, like the associates from this Solenosmilia coral fragment collected in the Denmark Strait. 🐙🦑🧪 #MarineEcology
The evolution of BathyCam, my modular underwater camera system! V2 integrates a nav camera plus handheld controller allowing us to see the seabed in real time. In September we used BathyCam V2 to collect data across a soft coral garden in NL using a fishing vessel & crab hauler! #marineecology

The soft coral garden at Funk island Deep Marine refuge - these were the first videos we captured in June 2024, I've been back twice to map more and it's much bigger than we first estimated! #Newfoundland is beautiful both above and below the ocean 🌊
My favourite moment on a recent Schmidt ocean expedition to the Galapagos: the lamps from the ROV SuBastian reflected in the eye of an umbrella octopus.
