A building of the Beelitz Sanatorium is being reclaimed by the forest. The front of the building is made of red bricks. The windowpanes are missing, but some frames and window ledges are still visible. The roof structure is gone; it burned down during the fighting in the Second World War. A forest has established itself on the area where the roof once was. The lush, dense greenery of the trees on top of the building creates a surreal effect. This lost place is an accessible attraction. From a treetop walkway, you have a view of the former sanatorium buildings.

The photo shows a split in the bark of a cherry tree. A great spotted woodpecker has wedged hazelnuts into the bark. They have become jammed in there so that it can crack the nuts with its beak. We are currently able to observe this behaviour from a woodpecker in our garden.

An ancient oak stands among other trees and a number of gravestones in a very old Jewish cemetery. It is a peaceful scene: sunlight falls through the canopy of leaves, tracing patterns on the tall grass that grows beneath the trees. Here, on the outskirts of a small town, it is quiet. Brimstone #butterfly on a #lavender blossom. These butterflies can live for 12 to 13 months. They can survive extremely low winter temperatures of down to – 20 degrees Celsius. #ECK #Scape #GardenScape #photography #nature #naturephotography #garden #June #Zitronenfalter

A presumably female brimstone butterfly is collecting nectar from a lavender flower. It is positioned on the left side of the bloom. The butterfly's proboscis is inserted into one of the florets. We view the pale yellow wing and body from the side. The eye and antennae are clearly discernible, as are the insect's yellow legs. Individual veins stand out distinctly across the wing.
By late morning (when I took the picture), it's already nearly 30 degrees Celsius. This June heatwave is unbearable. I do hope the butterflies are resilient enough for these temperatures.

The building, constructed of red bricks from an old brick factory, is visible only partially in the frame. The elongated flat-roofed structure looms like a tall wall before the camera. Two square windows are set into the upper third of the building, whilst two white shutters can be seen in the lower third. The intensely red, towering wall leaves the viewer with a rather forbidding and distinctly unpleasant impression.
