Nearly 2,000 hectares of retired grazing land in South Australia, replanted with local species between 2005 and 2014. Wetlands and Wildlife's Morella project now joins up 13,000 hectares of habitat near the Coorong.

It took 31 years. WA Forest Alliance launched Forests for Life in 1990, an alternative to native forest logging backed by over 25 groups. In September 2021 WA announced the end of native forest logging.

One of the busiest project runners in our data is an organisation whose members are children. Millennium Kids has 71 environmental projects on record, 1996 to 2020, including a school travel week that cut car arrivals 22%.

In December 2016 a Melbourne council became the world's first government to declare a climate emergency. Behind it was @darebincan.bsky.social, a volunteer group lobbying new councillors. 28 countries have since followed.

Protest is the visible part. Across the 170,483 environmental events we hold, there are almost as many hands on days as demonstrations: 25,684 tree plantings, clean ups, citizen science outings and working bees, against 26,261 protest style actions.

In June 1966, scientist James Lovelock warned Shell in a confidential memo of “the almost certain fact that the climate is worsening and the probability that the combustion of fuel is responsible.” Shell would later become "a founding member of the denialist Global Climate Coalition." 😑

Who does the environmental movement actually protest? Across 16,998 protest actions where a target was recorded, 65.7% were aimed at government and only 13.5% at a company. The movement argues with the state far more than the boardroom.
