A #painting that was on the go for long time. "Roundstone Boats" is a scene south of the village and harbour where a turn down to Roundstone Bay takes you to where sleeping boats rest. I started it in 2004 and wasn't happy with it until it looked like this - in 2020. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear #SpeirGhorm

#painting Once upon a happy day in west Cork I spent a few hours south of Clonakilty in Ring painting the scene one direction. When I struggled I turned the other direction and painted this, "Ring Boats", before returning to the larger painting and then cycling on to Skibbereen. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

In the foreground on the left 2 small blue boats are anchored on a very pale blue and lilac body of water with a handful of orange buoys scattered around them. The water has paler, almost white, strokes running horizontally mostly in the foreground. The more central of the boats is a little larger and further away, and it has a small white wheelhouse. Running horizontally across the centre of the water is an exposed stretch of sand reaching out from the right side tapering in until it almost reaches the left edge. The horizon divides the painting into two equal halves. On the far side of the water sitting on the horizon are a couple of rounded green hills with a patchwork of a handful of fields in different shades of green on them and a sliver of a strand at the water's edge of both hills. The hill on the right is closer than the one on the left so the water goes back further on the left half. Touches of red under-painting show through in places at the edges of the boats and on the dark hedgerows on the hills. The sky is a very painterly smokey mixture of greens and blues. Have a #painting. "The Great Sugar Loaf" Once upon a time I had knees that loved to take me and my bicycle all over the mountains that spill into what was then the county of Dublin. I'd climb into them and explore Wicklow, finding places to sit for a sandwich and the views. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

A southwest of Ireland #painting "Tralee II" was the second time I painted this section of Rock Street in the County Kerry town. Cycling years later I would get a puncture at this spot prompting me to drink tea and go on to paint a 3rd picture of the street. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze

I'm approaching the anniversary of the last time I received any kind of income. Having to cancel my annual sale of original paintings and close my print shop, it's been not great for an unpaid carer. So over the next couple of weeks you'll see me push unsold paintings and try out some print options.

A Dublin #painting. "Heuston II" was painted back when I used to hang around the bridge for the views up the river and the sense of space by the station. I still get a thrill every time I pass through the space even if I don't get as many opportunities to spend time there. #Art #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Just past the station to its left is a chocolate coloured wide 3-story building with a dark blue roof and a pale cupola on its left corner. A clump of trees is in middle distance on left, rendered in very dark blue with dark olive tops. Straight ahead the centre are muted reds and greys in strokes indicating distant buildings. The scene is all under tram wires crisscrossing against a yellow painterly sky, the only other item which pierces it being the lamp rising on the right from the bridge pier. For anyone who could use just looking at a #painting of two dogs. "Maiko and Oskar". Once upon a happy time in Ennis I stayed in a fabulous house with two pugs. Luckily they stood still for me to paint them, and the painting stayed in the house as I cycled on to more adventures. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Have a #painting while I sort food. "Aasleagh Falls" came out of a day I travelled around Killary Harbour. On the River Erriff, before it joins the harbour, the falls are in Mayo but only stone's throw from Leenane in Galway. I was on my bicycle, throwing stones to check. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in very loose acrylics on canvas. View diagonally across river, at O'Connell Bridge on right, a flat road bridge in very pale blue with balustrade along its top and the Liffey Boardwalk on left with railings in white. They meet in the centre of the painting. Water is rendered mostly in deep orange, with individual strokes on top of white, navy, and mid-blue depending on whether light or dark is being reflected. Large trees line the quays near side and far side of the bridge, their full foliage shapes of very dark green and blue being almost black, like under the boardwalk hiding all of the river wall, and under the two and a half visible arches of the bridge. On right edge at the back is the square tower of Liberty Hall in alternating narrow bands of concrete in bright blue and windows rendered in darker blues mixed with the odd white one. The tower is topped with a pale blue green square hat with a zig-zag brim. Other buildings behind the trees are 4 or 5 stories and a mixture of orange, with white and blue elements, in very suggestive strokes including darker bits for windows. Have a west of Ireland #painting. "Lough Nafurnace" in south Connemara I've painted a couple of times, first struck by it when I was in my teens and destined for the Gaeltacht. This painting came out of a time I spent alone looking at the lake thinking life wasn't half bad. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Square format in acrylics on canvas. View across a lake to a low pale yellow rocky horizontal strip of land where rocks are cream with blue-grey shadows. Sitting into the strip, one-third of the way out from the right-hand edge, is a white 2-storey house, rendered in pale pink on the front facing viewer where it is in shadow, and brighter on the left on the gable end. It has a blue slate roof with a narrow white chimney in the centre. There is also gable front at the left corner adjoining the gable end, while to its right are 3 upper story windows and what looks like it might be a porch on the ground level to the right. Immediately behind the house and to its right side are dark green-blue bushes. Further back behind the house is a purple undulating ridge and behind that in the distance is a range of pale blue mountains, softly undulating from their highest point by the left edge close to the top of the painting, down to the right where they disappear behind the purple ridge directly behind the house. The bottom 3 quarters of the picture is a lake of lilac with some ripples of bright blue and turquoise, with narrow grassy lump of an islet in the middle housing a single small bush, and a similar yellow ochre grassy mound jutting out from left in foreground. Rocks are littered along left edge. Sky is white clouds with grey-lilac on their lower parts and all blended into a pale blue. In the foreground the water ripples diagonally from the grassy mound. A #painting from Ireland's west. "Lahinch" came out of trips to the County Clare coast where I'd enjoy, well I'm a stereotype so it would be a feed of pints followed by a feed of chips, and then there's the beach. #art #SpeirGhorm #ArtAdventCalendar

An Irish #painting not of Dublin now. "Blue Mountains, Green Grass I" I painted a long time ago, because I like the shapes our country gives us. A large painting for me (101 cm x 76 cm), it was exhibited in America before going to a good home there. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Rural scene of pasture with trees, hills and mountains. Foreground of tall green grass gives way to flat textured orange area with 2 dark sculpture-like small dead trees. Then the ground morphs into orangey-lime before a horizontal very dark red broken tree-line that stretches the full width of the picture about one third of the way up. On the far side are gently undulating lime fields separated by dark red hedgerows and on right an area of a mass of very dark red trees. Past more flat fields of green and pale orange, hills rise steeply on both sides rendered in various shades of green. Through the gap in the centre we see a similar V-shape of large rugged steep blue mountains with white and blue clouds in the gap and spilling over onto the mountain on the left. Another Dublin #painting. The former Central Bank building I painted as a commission, but I only took it on because I liked the building. As it was built hanging on its centre, I would never walk under it for fear it would drop down right as I was underneath. I still don't. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Under a green sky is the hanging tower block of the now former Central Bank in Dublin.
Rectangular in format it has seven bands of stone or concrete, rendered in cream with dark blue-green bands of windows between them. On some floors rows of ceiling lights are visible, or reflections on the window panes. There is an eight band at the top, extra wide being at least twice the width of the other bands, and it projects out slightly than the lower levels with steel trusses attached that hang down holding onto all the other levels. There is a pair of the dark chain-like steel trusses on the left narrow side, and two pairs on the longer front side facing the viewer. A wide band of steps, of pale blue within cream walls, rises up at the front from the ground to the central third section underneath the first concrete band. To the side of the stairs we can see underneath the main block of the building to the streets behind. Scattered in the plaza in front of the building are five leafless ornamental trees rendered in red, two small dark evergreen trees on the left, and a modern sculpture on the right featuring a golden sphere with a cream granite pillar that rises up and partly shields it. The historic three-story Commercial Buildings are to the right. Rendered in cream where the sun hits the left side with the central door, and darker on the short side facing to Dame Street on the right. Much of the foreground is in dark blue shadow, that reaches back on the left to the lower stories of the buildings on the street behind, and on the right up onto the corner of Commercial Buildings, giving the effect of the former Central Bank being spotlighted by the sun. Along the bottom of the painting is a narrow band of a painterly yellow. I took this photo of the painting before adding my signature.

I need to hoover, so have a #painting. "Connemara Lake House" is a scene in south Connemara that I've painted more than once - because when I was there, standing by the lake it was hard not to notice how well composed our planet is. And then I cycled on into the view. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear

Portrait format in painterly acrylics with bold black outlines of varying thickness separating shapes not altogether dissimilar to a stained glass effect. A little more than the bottom half is the lake, with bright teal water and horizontal brush marks of different shades. From the left a small piece of olive green land juts out and near its end is a small yellow mound on which there are four small trees, rendered as a black trunk with dark red blobby top. Another green triangle of land juts from the left closer to the bottom of the painting. It is smaller and has a dark red reflection. At the far end of the lake is a strip of olive green land running across the full width of the painting. It has a white double-gabled house sitting on top of the higher section on the right. Its roof, doors and windows are black. Behind it is another horizontal strip of land, in ochre with a slightly undulating top. Behind that is light brown hill on the right and behind it an orange hill on the left two thirds with a peak near its centre. Behind that, at the greatest distance is a dark yellow triangular mountain with its peak near the left edge. The sky is a mixture of smokey yellows. The painting is not signed.

Ah here, have another County Mayo #painting. "Ballina II" came out of multiple trips to the town on the River Moy where traditionally I have too much fun. I also would stand in quiet and enjoy the river. Think I've done 5 paintings of Ballina now, and I suspect I'm not finished. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Time for a #painting "Howth Lighthouse and Dublin Bay" was one of the dozens of paintings I did the first time I did a 24-hour livestreamed video painting marathon thing. It's an evening view of the Baily Lighthouse and across the bay as seen from high up on the Howth Cliff Walk #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear

Bottom half is the sea rendered in a dark blue somewhere between ultramarine and royal blue. On the right edge a triangular of a headland juts out into the sea. It is a very dark red and green, appearing almost black. On its upper slope there is a step where a small white and grey lighthouse sits, the tower rising from a rectangular building. Above the horizon the sky is a smokey pale blue with a warm under-painting hinting at broad horizontal patches of very muted orange, appearing almost as a pale green. Along the horizon a narrow undulating strip of land reaches out from the right edge to three-quarters of the way across, tapering as it stretches out. It is dark so contrast with the sky, but not as dark as the headland in the right foreground. The sea closest to the land is a pale blue, almost the same as the sky, and has a smokey edge giving the effect of the land rising from mist and over at its left end disappearing into it. A #painting of Dublin's Bull Alley. One warm day after sketching in southwest Dublin I cycled to town and sat in St Patrick's Park to enjoy the cathedral beside it, the flowers, even the people. While drinking tea I sketched the Iveagh Trust buildings opposite. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanSketching

Landscape format. Ink and watercolour painting of large period red brick, 5-storey building. Top storey is dormer windows with red surrounds in a deep electric blue slate. I've rendered red-brick of the building in orange. It also has some pink sections and stripes on square tower-like endings. Windows are mostly square with a slightly arched top, and black with many small panes separated by white frames. Five large chimneys are along the roof. Several red drainpipes run down the building. In front of it are 2 large trees, without foliage, gnarly of thick brown trunk with green and purple on their branches which reach up higher than the top of the roof. The trees are inside the park from where the painting was done, so has a leaf-green hedge and lime lawn in the foreground, and black railings behind the trees through which we see the street level of the large building. On the left of the yellow-green lawn in the foreground are a couple of decorative evergreen bushes with some blue, and on the right is a small tree with its trunk split at the bottom into three or four thin brown trunks all leading via gentle curves to the same thick mop of foliage of various greens. Grey steps to the street can be seen behind the split trunk at the end of the hedge. Sky is left blank white with just sparse branches and twigs of the two big trees breaking it.
