June 11, 1963. My late sister in law - Vivian Malone - with the help of the Department of Justice and President Kennedy integrated the University of Alabama. The Governor of the state, George Wallace, stood in the school house door to prevent her from enrolling.

The redistricting referendums in Virginia & California stand in stark contrast to states where maps were enacted without public input, and at the direction of Trump. We’re meeting the moment responsibly - and sending a message that we will not sit back and watch MAGA attempt to steal our elections.

The victory in Virginia tonight reminds us that the people will defend democracy. Virginians who care about fairness didn’t just win an election – they have stopped Trump’s attempt to steal the 2026 midterms. A message to the White House: We will fight everywhere. And win.

Doing nothing - or capitulating - while Trump destroys our democracy is not an option.

That’s what tomorrow’s Virginia referendum is all about: meeting this democracy threat head-on with a TEMPORARY, voter-approved measure that levels the national playing field ahead of the midterms. Vote YES!

Virginia: Don’t be fooled by these deceptive, disgraceful, and deeply racist ads. What they are doing is an old trick with a dark history. I believe we—the people—have the power—and we need to use it. Make a plan to vote YES. Early voting ends this Saturday 4/18. Election Day is Tuesday 4/21.

Bob was more than a colleague to me. He was a friend. I hope that Bob Mueller‘s family is comforted on this sad day by the pride that those of us who served with him all feel. We were all fortunate to work with this great American. Bob made the nation better. Rest in peace my dear friend.

Texas is close to not being a functioning democracy It’s the hardest place to vote because Republicans have put impediments in place based on totally bogus vote fraud concerns - that they just make up The courts have become complicit in this effort What we’re seeing in Texas now is a disgrace

I posted this one year ago at what was probably the height of Trump’s power. There’s more work to be done but these five things still make up a pretty good outline of how we save our democracy - not through resignation and capitulation but through determination and action. We can do this.

This is the way back (2025): *an aroused/involved American people *effective lawsuits *wins in state/local elections *political class finds its footing *falling Republican polling numbers All are starting to happen.

Great visit this morning with Governor Wes Moore of Maryland (and my son who works on his staff). Trying to convince legislators in their state senate to stand up to Trump & Republicans and their mid cycle gerrymander. This nefarious effort will devalue the votes of the citizens of that great state.

Just as Mamie Till refused to hide the visual truth that was her son Emmett’s beaten body in the 1950s, just as we saw the visual truth of the beating of John Lewis on the Pettus bridge in 1965, we must confront the visual truth of agents killing U.S. citizens in Minneapolis. Do not look away.

Bovino is not leaving Minneapolis cause he wants to. Not cause Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, Vance or Trump want him to go. He’s leaving because the extraordinary “ordinary” citizens of that great city - by peacefully protesting en masse - kicked him out. Lesson to be learned. We have power.

So let me get this straight. The Justice Department WON’T investigate the shooting of a woman protesting ICE excesses in Minnesota but WILL investigate the Governor and Mayor? What are you going to charge the Mayor and Governor with? “Felony disagreement?” Absurd and shameful.

I was honored to receive the Reverend Fred L. Shuttleswoth Human Rights Award at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama this past week. You can read my full remarks on my Substack.
