The Cavity Weevil (Curculio dentalis) is a parasite of mammalian teeth. It drills through the enamel with its long rostrum, depositing eggs in the soft pulp. The larvae eat through the supporting tissues of the tooth, making them rot to leave an opening for the adult to exit.

A closeup of a mouth. Several teeth have large rotten holes in them, inside which lie large beetle larvae. Other holes lie empty, while one large hole has an adult weevil emerging from it. A dental instrument is being used to pry one of the larvae off its tooth.
