“LIQUIDICE is a continuum of long-term snow and ice research under the SIOS umbrella.” 🎥 Heikki Lihavainen from SIOS KC explains how the partnership started at the Svalbard Science Conference 2023. SIOS KC leads project's data management, helping make LIQUIDICE research accessible and sustainable.

Despite unusually warm spring conditions in Svalbard, the ISP CNR team managed to complete most planned LIQUIDICE measurements near Ny-Ålesund. At Austre Brøggerbreen, researchers found the snowpack already fully wet and nearly isothermal in April. It is an important signal of rapid Arctic change.

🧊 Fieldwork at Freya Glacier, Greenland Francisco Navarro & Unai Letamendia from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid were using ground penetrating radar to study polythermal glaciers & their responce to climate change. It helps reveal: • ice thickness • bedrock position • cold vs temperate ice layers

Fieldwork update from Northeast Greenland 🇬🇱 While several Svalbard campaigns were shortened or cancelled, the team from University of Madrid completed their Freya Glacier campaign in Greenland despite harsh conditions: no snow for snowmobiles, long hikes with equipment, and GPR surveys on skis.
