🚨 Student life is getting more expensive almost everywhere. In 88% of countries, students' total monthly expenses rose faster than inflation between E:VII and E:8. The steepest (42% or more) increases? 📈 🇭🇷 Croatia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇵🇱 Poland 🇷🇴 Romania 🇨🇿 Czech Republic

⏰ Not all degrees come with the same study workload. Across EUROSTUDENT countries, students spend 16 hrs/week in taught studies and 18 hrs on personal study. Long national degree (in many countries Medicine, Law, and Teacher Education) students stand out with the highest personal study time (23hrs).

🎓 Part-time study seems to work well for many students. In 8 of 21 EUROSTUDENT countries where official part-time studies exist, part-time students are at least 5 percentage points more likely than all students to recommend their programme.

Student housing doesn’t always mean better connectivity 🏠️ 🛜 Across EUROSTUDENT countries, 7% of students in student accommodation report insufficient internet access — compared with 4% of students living with others, alone, or with parents, and 3% of those living with partners/children.

Across EUROSTUDENT countries, an av. of 8% of students started their studies via a non-traditional access route. The share ranges from 25% in 🇮🇸 Iceland to just 1% in 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, 🇫🇷 France, and 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan. Students with parents without tertiary qualifications use these routes more often.

Did you know that student groups receiving national public student support clearly less often than average are those attending non-universities (32%), attending private HEIs (15%), MA students (34%), and students whose parents are financially very well-off (35%)?

Summer School for all EUROSTUDENT countries that collected data this year has just been launched by @ihs.ac.at! 🕶️ ☀️ We are looking forward to discussing all kinds of data-related questions in 7 sessions over the next weeks with our researchers from 🇫🇷, 🇮🇹, 🇱🇹, 🇱🇻, 🇳🇱, 🇵🇹, 🇷🇴.

The majority of students in the EHEA have parents with a tertiary degree. However, in 🇵🇹 Portugal, 🇭🇷 Croatia, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, and 🇷🇴 Romania, students from non-tertiary educational backgrounds are in the majority, representing more than 50% of students.

2nd-generation migrants are often underrepresented in HE. However, in 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, and 🇵🇱 Poland, the representation of such students exceeds the anticipated level – based on the share of 2nd-generation migrants in the population – by at least 33%.

Did you know that internship experiences across Europe vary sharply? For example, in 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 41% of internships are both mandatory and paid. Meanwhile, 🇷🇴 Romania, 🇵🇱 Poland, and 🇭🇷 Croatia stand out with 40%+ of voluntary internships being paid.

Students across countries spend approximately 90% of their monthly expenses on living costs. In 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇸🇪 Sweden, and 🇪🇪 Estonia, that share reaches 96% or even more — largely because so few students pay tuition fees. In the Nordic countries, fee-paying students make up 3% or less.

Here you can see how relative time budgets differ between working students who see themselves as ‘workers‘ vs ‘students‘. The largest difference can be seen in 🇫🇮 Finland and 🇸🇪 Sweden: ‘workers’ time budget is higher by 23% compared to ‘students’ time budget of a typical week.
