Retro Tech Dreams@retrotechdreams.bsky.social · 2w agoThe Pocket Surfer 2 (2008, £179.99) offered 20 hrs/mo of free internet and unlimited access for £5.99/mo. Plus it was faster than any smartphone. How? DataWind preprocessed webpages on their servers as images before sending them to the devices.
When I started Miren, the idea was always to launch Miren Anywhere because it is truly what makes self-hosted clusters sing. It removes the awkward network location question and gives you the ability to use compute anywhere it might be. I'm so fucking excited to let you all use it!

The family and I have been in Sweden the last week and it’s always surprising when someone hears my accent and asks if I’m from England. (I have a flat American accent) It’s an honest reminder that languages are hard even when every Swede knows English w minimum of 1000% more than I know Swedish.
The real problem was how to ship a database that users shouldn’t even know exists.

In a library, there are books old and new. And few feel older and less relevant than a book on using Twitter from 2009.
