There's a screening of the 1994 Crow tonight. I've never seen it. Can I take my almost-13-yr-old, who's fine with R movies and seen some relatively heavy ones? He's seen Walking Dead, Inglorious Basterds, Sirat, a weird long 1970s Polish movie w/ too much space nudity... I'm a terrible parent.

not unique to me! see also assoc profs waylaid by teaching and/or service. above all it’s interesting to think about parallel—though different—emphases on the “first book” with its assumption of a second and third and and and when there isn’t infrastructure to support that at scale.

I can suspend my disbelief while watching film in most respects except for when people use microfilm to look at old newspapers AND QUICKLY LAND ON THE EXACT PAGE THAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. Without slowly scrolling through countless pages, without having to nudge the image or adjust the contrast.

Historical researcher villain origin story. During my postdoc, I went through reels of the newspaper of the Communist Party of Australia, for weeks on end. The year after I finished, the National Library of Australia had started digitising the entire run of the newspaper with search function.

I can suspend my disbelief while watching film in most respects except for when people use microfilm to look at old newspapers AND QUICKLY LAND ON THE EXACT PAGE THAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. Without slowly scrolling through countless pages, without having to nudge the image or adjust the contrast.

An accurate film would spend about 5-10 minutes with the lead character struggling to remember *how* to use the microfilm viewer, finally spools it in and turns it on, but then it's upside down so they have to start over again.
