Access to healthcare, clean air, and FOOD are basic human rights.
Pope Leo this week called universal health coverage a "moral imperative." He also said: “Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” it is “an essential condition for social peace.”
One of the genuinely beautiful things about local journalism taken seriously is that it gives you daily views into things that people love about this city that are different from the things you already love about the city
Brooklyn has been graced with the appearance of a swan so rare that experts say there have been no recorded sightings of the bird in New York City—until now.

I lived with my dad when I was very young and he didn’t apply for food stamps or free school lunches, though we qualified. So, I went hungry. It was awful. I begged neighbors for saltine crackers. I can say it was the worst time of my life. Children shouldn’t go hungry. Restore SNAP benefits.
Stop giving your money to billionaires. You can do it.

The bill adds $3.3 trillion in debt. That violates the statutory paygo law of 2010 that requires across-the-board sequestration cuts. Many accounts (like Social Security and some low-income programs) are exempted from that. But Medicare is not. Here's the breakdown:
Please watch @danfrompasco.bsky.social -- board member and chair of our political committee-- on the federal budget proposal and what it means for ALL New Yorkers.
A hungry city is not a safe city. A hungry city is a place where we have to lock up baby formula in cages in our grocery stores as people grow desperate for ways to feed their families. That’s not New York. —Emmy Brett, Director, Greenpoint Hunger Program

Thank you, Zohran Mamdani, for your Q&A with asylum seekers about your platform and political views at Cafewal this winter. You listened to human stories about the very real struggle so many New Yorkers face when trying to access basic human needs. We will hold you accountable for these words.

Hi friends. Food insecurity is a policy choice. It’s a non partisan issue and @evlovesnyc.bsky.social is committed to fighting against it. Whether it’s new NYers here to seek asylum in the face of harsh immigration crack downs, or a native NYer priced out of their home.

MAGA may call the proposed budget that the House passed last week “big and beautiful” but it seems more “cruel and dangerous” to us. The budget cuts federal food assistance for 1.8 MILLION NEW YORKERS, INCLUDING A HALF MILLION NY CHILDREN. 2/3
This budget “efficiency” means that parents will skip meals to make sure their kids can eat. Older New Yorkers on fixed incomes will resort to less healthy but more affordable food options. And many more working New Yorkers have to turn to food banks like EVLovesNYC to get through the week. 3/3
We feed everyone else who needs a hot meal, including kids and seniors and immigrants and that quiet lady in your building. No one in NYC should go hungry. Help us? Your $$= good food for neighbors. evloves.networkforgood.com/projects/224...
