ok to close the loop on this: a researcher looked into this in an article from 2022 called "Fatal Attraction: Loving the Guillotined Woman, from Washington Irving to Alexandre Dumas". the earliest instance of the story is from a pamphlet published in 1613!

that's helpful, thanks! I also found this as the source for the story in the 1984 book: “The Green Ribbon” is based on a European folk motif in which a red thread is worn around a person’s neck. The thread marks the place where the head was cut off, then reattached. so maybe it predates this?

what's the oldest source you know for the scary story about the girl who always wears the ribbon around her neck? I can't seem to find anything definitive

I'm reading Voltaire and it seems to me that he was the 18th century version of a bluesky user dunking on writers for The Atlantic

why do all of the US states that won't shut the fuck up about "freedom" have the most restrictive laws about when and where you can buy beer

unpopular opinion, but I don't like Christopher Nolan at all. I basically despise every movie he's made. so I'm not sure I'll like The Odyssey despite what everyone is saying

there was a woman on my flight yesterday that couldn't stop watching AI-generated slop videos that were like melodrama soap opera clips. I can't even believe these people exist. she was an adult!!!

i found someone's old mix CD from ~2009 and there's a track that i can't identify through shazam or google which is pretty weird

I called our HVAC company a couple days ago and they had an AI answering service for scheduling. after a bunch of questions it said "let's go ahead and get you scheduled as early as possible. how's January 13th?". I told it to connect me with a human and I was scheduled 2 days out.

apparently LG TVs have a feature that auto-dims the screen and it triggers a lot when I watch old black and white movies. the only way to disable it is with a completely separate service remote I had to buy for $7

this is a pretty obvious tell that Trump's cognitive abilities are slipping. insults are his bread and butter, but now they're not funny or clever and he's asking for feedback on which variation is better??

POLL: Which do you prefer Dumocrat or Dumbocrat? In one case, you simply exchange the "e" for "u," so simple and precise Many people don't know, or assume. that DUMB ends in "b"). In the other case, you spell out DUMB, but it seems to lose some of the identity to Democrats when done this wav. Which is better?
Thank you for vour attention to this very important matter! President DJT
