Our mathematical analysis reveals that electrical activity in a sheet of cortical tissue can have an infinite-dimensional attracting set. Adjacent networks may not interfere each other if their activity is sufficiently localized in space, a property seemingly crucial for long-term memory circuits.

On the Global Dynamics of an Electroencephalographic Mean Field Model of the Neocortex | SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems

This paper investigates the global dynamics of a mean field model of the electroencephalogram developed by Liley, Cadusch, and Dafilis [Network, 13 (2002), pp. 67--113]. The model is presented as a sy...

When environmental conditions vary almost linearly in space, species' range limits formed by competition are unlikely to be stable We show that sharp nonlinear changes in the environment can strongly stabilize range borders--with interesting implications for predicting responses to climate change!

Environmental “knees” and “wiggles” as strong stabilizers of species’ range limits set by interspecific competition

Author summary Individuals of natural populations often compete for resources and space. At the same time, most species have a remarkable capability to adapt to new environments and expand their range...
