40 years ago, Konami's Salamander AKA Life Force slithered into European arcades. This sequel to Nemesis/Gradius upped the shoot 'em up ante with improved audiovisuals, simultaneous two-player action, and an even more impressive array of power-ups. A bona fide arcade classic.

35 years ago, we reviewed Mega Drive Out Run, which was decent, but not great. These were the olden days when 69% was considered "a pretty good game that should still appeal to fans of the genre." Just a bit too easy and felt somewhat dated vs some of the newer Mega Drive racers.

35 years ago, Mean Machines' cover featured Mega Drive Ice Hockey. We rated the game 95%. Other top reviews: NES Boulderdash 92% and Kabuki 90%, Game Boy Hunt for Red October 90%, SMS Psycho Fox 90% and Spider-Man 87%, and Mega Drive 688 Attack Sub 84%. A decent summer issue!

35 years ago, Road Rash roared into the Mean Machines office. It was, of course, an absolute stone cold classic - the first of a legendary series of Mega Drive games that were hugely popular. Indeed, this one was EA's most profitable release yet at the time. Just brilliant, brilliant stuff!
