I read the first volume of this, and I liked how it thought through the relationship between the "players" and the "game world" residents. (so there are these immortal beings who come to our world out of nowhere...) Just a tiny bit dystopian! I appreciate that!

Unless you use D2D, I guess. I don't know what this means, and there's no explanation. "You must have a direct relationship with Ingram Content Group to submit this form. If you do not have a direct relationship with Ingram Content Group, your publisher will need to submit the form." Great...well.

There is also a weird thing with wanting more games to feature diverse viewpoints, then acknowledging indies are doing that, so basically what you want is a big budget game to do what indies are doing... And you gotta give this up.

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 7. Something in your WIP that surprised you I tried to fix a continuity error from 10 novellas ago, and ended up adding to some lore. Didn't plan any of that. A cameo and throwaway line about dragons in novella 1 ended up not fitting what I did with them later...

I think just more nuance, more ambiguity, less neatness/black-and-white thinking, more messiness, more complexity, moving parts, undefined edges. (And readers who don't whine about encountering it, but that's proving too much to hope.)

What would you like to see more of in the fantasy fiction of the next five years? Where do you think the genre has room for growth and exploration--or which recent developments would you like to see continued?

I'm outside this situation, not primarily a smut reader and don't write it at all (sorry). (Though I support it, okay) This is an interesting piece outlining what sounds like a frustrating situation, borne out of, among other things, overstated marketing. If you promise something, deliver!

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 5. Saturday Snippet The end of Ch. 1 of Sparklebloom Meadows, featuring Berry, our tiny foul-mouthed elven enby goth plant mage, and our v. confused narrator, who's going by Justin at this point. (yes, sorry, I'm stuck in light mode 💀) (first draft, don't @ me)

Snippet:

Berry held out their hand again, and the plant unfolded another handful of leaves right in front of my lying eyes. I stared as Berry plucked off the top third or so of the plant, stripped the leaves into my drink, and closed their hand around the remaining stems. Green light dripped between their fingers into the flower pot. Then they pulled up the whole plant by the roots and melted it all.

By the time Berry said “Can’t let it run wild,” I had squished into the opposite edge of the Adirondack chair. After a thousand hours in the game, it shouldn’t freak me out, right? I’d cast Instant Grow hundreds of times. But my brain wasn’t absorbing what my eyes took in. Also, melting plants wasn’t one of the spells in Sparklebloom Meadows. *Also, you needed a wand to cast spells.*

I must have been staring, too, given Berry’s expression as they plopped down onto the porch swing next to my chair. “It’s a lot. I know.”

There were too many questions. Who are you really? Where am I? What was that tower in the distance? How did you cast magic without a wand? Why do I have the hair from my Sparklebloom main when nothing else in this dream is from the game? What was that light Berry kept giving off? How did I get these clothes?

The only one that got through was, “How do I wake up?”

It sounded tight and weak. Blue light bloomed around the lavender-haired stranger, and they laced their fingers together between their knees. Their feet barely touched the boards of the porch, even with thick-soled boots.

“I’m sorry, man,” they said. “You don’t.”

Just finished this. Wow. So. The Little House books are wild colonialist and ~self-sufficiency~ propaganda, AND they were probably a bigger influence on me than anything else I read as a kid. That and a set of kids' encyclopedias that I absolutely devoured (shoutout to Childcraft). 🧵

#FantasyIndiesSeptember 4. Free Friday or do you collect anything? I try not to (smallish house*), but in the last few years I got hooked on the Botanical and Animal Crossing Lego sets. Now I have minifigs of various themes displayed on my desk, too. 🤦 * by US standards. It's completely fine.

A minifig display with several space/sf-themed figs, plus 2 random minis, a tuba player and a diving scientist

(the stands are 3D-printed by a Lego reseller store, they're handy)A minifig display with a few themes going on:
People in animal costumes in the back row
Holidays in the middle row
Food themed in the front row (and a gap that I'm still trying to fill! Chili pepper costume person, I'll find you someday lol)
