My employer does a good job navigating some of these discrepancies, and I am happy here, but the NTT system that disproportionately employs women replicates inequalities that have plagued higher education for centuries and, effectively, legitimizes them.

In general, I like my job (NTT faculty at an R2). The work is manageable. The students are smart and engaged. My colleagues are kind. But, as a person whose work focuses on the social dynamics that shape women's lives, the inequity between TT and NTT faculty members is impossible to ignore.

Congratulations to Dr. Haneul (Chloe) Kim, who successfully defended her PhD this week! It's been great supervising her together with Eric Chitambar, and I'm really proud of her thesis work. 🥳🎓⚛️ Thanks also to the thesis committee (Eric Chitambar, Marius Junge, Daniel Alabi, and myself)!

Congratulations to Dr. Sujeet Bhalerao, who successfully defended his PhD today! It's been a pleasure supervising him, and I'm excited to see where his journey will take him. 🥳🎓⚛️ Thanks also to the rest of the thesis committee (Fernando Granha Jeronimo, Eric Chitambar, Marius Junge, and myself)!

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

More broadly I’ve heard a variety of comments from physicists (not the blogger) that are along the lines of: “we don’t even need students anymore” and “what’s the point of hiring students anymore” and it’s really hard not to reply “it’s our job to train the next generation you stupid, selfish fuck”

A big part of my job as a physics professor — emphasis on the professor part here — is training my early career group members and colleagues in the craft of writing scientific papers. And that means paying attention to how they write so I can talk to them about what will help them do it better.

I also think that a lot of the most important parts of writing happen at the revision stage. That’s where you figure out the distances between what you thought you were saying, what you actually said, and what you should be saying. And that’s an active thinking process. GenAI can’t do it for you.

It's an academic DoS attack. Also it feels like OpenAI have burst in through the door and said "hey, I finished all those jigsaw puzzles you were doing - you're welcome!"

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

We recast the sample complexity of k-copy quantum state discrimination as a quantum mixing time problem that becomes fully classical under suitable (and natural) symmetries, with applications to e.g. learning phase states and hypergraph states. scirate.com/arxiv/2609.4...
