Big Tech has worked to relentlessly stigmatize being single. Dating Apps. Social Media. New stories. Old-fashioned billboards. AI Bots. Many computer campaigns used sexy shots of women and computers for marketing. #singleover30 feministscientist.substack.com/p/toxic-algo...

Being on the job market is literally traumatic--the false hope, the string-alongs, the last minute cancellations. #jobmarket
Best advice I got as a #gradstudent when faced with bewildering presentations--just try to learn 1 new thing from the presentation. #academicchatter
5 people I knew and loved died during the height of COVID. My trust in community and the social contract is gone. I will never forget how loudly ppl screamed about keeping vunerable ppl safe and how casually ppl went back to regular life and left disabled and immunocompromised ppl by the wayside
What I hate about COVID downplayers is… you won okay. In the aftermath of humanity coming together to develop the most crucial vaccines of our lifetime & collectively sacrificing to save lives, we are now less safe, less vaccinated & less empathetic than ever. You won ok. Lay down your swords.
When your #graduatestudent in STEM student is struggling here's what to do: -Thank them for their work -Honor their experience -Talk about what's going on -Layout steps for mediation #academicchatter
This is yet another elitist system that brutalizes the most marginalized and often the most talented scholars in order to enshrine the mediocrity of white men that academia has always replicated, and yeah, we should care about that
Since 2020, I’ve had over 1200 creative writing rejections. I submit my creative writing to journals with lower acceptance rates. Read more on my #substack feministscientist.substack.com/p/1000-rejec... #writerscommunity
Maria Tallchief (1925-2013) was not only America’s first prima ballerina, but the first Native American prima ballerina. She was an original dancer @ New York City Ballet. She danced to acclaim in both classical ballets like Swan Lake, and more modern pieces.
The common response to #AI destructively scanning books for training: Bookstores and libraries throw out books all the time! How is this different at least the books are being put to good use right? 1. A librarian purged 75% of the librarian's collection in our town & people protested.
When it comes to outrage over #AI destructively scanning books for training: the common response is that bookstores and libraries throw out books all the time. How is this different? 1. The town I lived in had a dictator librarian that purged 75% of the libraries collection which led to protests
I don’t know who needs to hear this but never in human history have those who burned books been the good guys.
Only 1/2 of high schools offer calculus in the US. Yet pressure is mounting for students to go above AP calc in high school to pursue elite college admissions. Is it worth it? feministscientist.substack.com/p/do-high-sc...

Definitely not a fan of Alice Munro's writing. I read a collection of short stories 10 years ago and felt an immediate dislike for them. Her writing reminded me of people who bury deep, disturbing shit and pretend everything's fine. Turns out to be on point. #reading
It’s interesting to see how powerful this social conditioning is. My sibling and I were not raised to focus on marriage in college at all, and my parents met in their late 20s and got married well after they had travelled and established careers in their 20s. #singleover30

Been having a lot of fun creating these little feminist science ‘cards’. I have so much excess material or points to discuss that dont’ fit in articles. I make these all in PowerPoint, and fun to play around with images, fonts, colors. #womeinSTEM
Bad talking points for #STEM grad students from professors that perpetuate sexist myths: If you don't work 80 hours a week you are not passionate enough (hello burnout) Some people just aren't meant to be scientists or were admitted by mistake (you are just not providing the support they need)

Harassment at Sexual Assault at academic conference more information: #Academicchatter
Let's do better #academic conferences. In general, conferences really lack in accessibility—with the high fees, carbon footprint, risk of sexual assault, and inaccessible networking (only if you know the right people do you get the intros you need).
2 engineering degrees from Ivy Leage colleges. A PhD in engineering. Papers published in Nature. Detailed orientated, versed in multivariate statistics, AI, and coding. Still, this is not enough. For anyone.
Science funding cuts are peril.
NIH is testing their ability to terminate “unaligned” grants, with at least one new termination documented. Disgustingly, they awarded this grant simply so they could add a termination clause. Then they terminated it. From @jocelynkaiser.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...
Learning to use #AI will not solve the gap. According to workplace studies, women that use AI to code receive lower competency ratings than men who use AI to code in the workplace. #womeninSTEM

Even though I am a scientist (and have a PhD), that does not mean I am an expert in all science fields. I know very little about #marinebiology, #geology, #psychology, #astronmy and anything related to space. I literally never took separate classes in those fields
