In July 2009 this little guy wandered out of some bushes at a friend's BBQ. Unexpected for teenage lads but we all fed him and made sure he was alright. He never left. Pleased to report near 18 years on he (Theo) is still living with my friend, got a chance to see him again yesterday.

Having reread all the Discworld series this past year; in comparison to, well, whatever this is, Pratchett did a sterling job of interweave. Any novel could be someone's first Discworld read, characters are expertly introduced in a way that's fun for the knowledgeable but accessible to the newcomer.

Ready for your Avengers Doomsday homework? Marvel has released a watchlist of 15 movies and TV shows you should watch before December 18 rolls around. https://bit.ly/3UmhwmS

Chicken update: they slept on the roof of their house last night and as a result the roof fell off. They don't care because they're chickens and all of life's worries disappear when mealworm appears.

In a complex series of events I've ended up with chickens to temporarily look after till they can move on to a new home. I don't know how this has happened.

There's a bunch of folk I got to know well during 2020 as we all chatted animals, plants and life in a big whatsapp group. It just stopped one day as everyone's lives got busy (mine included!). Online friendships can be like that. But I'm so glad for everyone I got to know during that time.

If you want to know how stupid RAM prices have become back in late September I ordered some. £115 for 32gb. That same set now costs £521 in July. That's a 350% increase.

Watched the last episode of the Colbert Late Show yesterday. Having never seen the show before I can say it wasn't particularly for me, but it feels wild something so inoffensive & mildly cheeky had any grounds for cancelling.

Building lightshow drones for my day job has slightly ruined the mystique of drone shows (I look at them and instantly spot the ones having an RTK wobble or other issue). But it's also made me realise how much invisible work goes on just to have some fun silly lights sprinkle the air for 10 mins.

The US is hilarious to drive around because you'll come across things like "Big Beaver Road on Exit 69" and you can never be certain if anyone involved was filthy minded enough to make the connection.

Exit 69 Big Beaver Rd

If you think your car maintenance is a nightmare I've found out my brother, in trying to keep a cheap 100+ year old car on the road, is having to deal with a "porous block". Where the metal in the car is now so old that fluids will just magically vanish or worse, mix together.

Have always bought used cars, so not sure when car makers shifted from selling cars with greedy prices to selling terrible greedy rental schemes disguised as buying. Looking at hybrids/evs and it's awash with "x amount a month for 3 years, limited to y amount of miles, then £30k lump sum needed".

In race to the bottom advertising news Google will now suggest generated pictures to attach to your advertising campaign. We have a sister company that does cleaning drones (basically a hovering pressure washer to get up high) and this is what they suggest we run ads with.

I don't know how to explain the vibe of web comics 20 years ago to someone young today. Yeah you'd come for the main image but what you were really waiting for was to hover your cursor over it and indulge in that little quip of alt-text.

For the past 6 months I've been building and flying lightshow drones. If anyone's curious about it in general, want any at an event or to buy their own fleet I don't mind answering questions!

I still think the memes around loss.jpg and the resultant abstract pattern is funny. Putting a serious arc in a very silly games comic is tonally wild! But having gone through two back to back losses now, I understand it more. A weird invisible grief and not sure how to communicate it outwardly.

Brendy has been a consistently funny and poignant voice in video game spaces for over a decade. It's exciting to see them involved in starting their own website (with other esteemed alumni) to really flex all that makes games writing great. If you can, go support a cool thing at the ground level!

We're launching a website. Jank is an independent PC games website funded by readers. jank.cool If you like funny, thoughtful games journalism and can't stand adverts, deals posts, affiliate links, and other nonsense - Jank is for you.

Been watching (for the 1st time) Hell's Kitchen on Prime and it's wild how much about the early seasons in the 00's feel archaic now. It also comes with the bonus of looking up contestants 20-25 years after the show and seeing how many police mugshots there are since then (roughly 1-3 per season!).

Concept artistry has a real ebb and flow that helps nail down the feel of a game, it should be one of the earliest ports of call for fresh creativity in a project. For 15 years my laptop's homescreen has been a piece of Bioshock concept art, it's sad that future games will generate nothing similar.

NEW: I spoke to Larian boss Swen Vincke about their ambitions for their new RPG Divinity, cutting down development time, pressures from Baldur's Gate 3, why BG3 wouldn't have happened without Tencent, how Larian uses generative AI, and much more www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

Thinking of the things I saw playing video games too young in the 90s. Distinct memory of not understanding why going up to women in Duke Nukem and pressing the space bar offered them money. Why there was a nudity cheat included in a cheat book that didn't work but instead made Lara Croft explode.

The recent choice between on Steam spending £70 on Doom the Dark Ages, or spending £15 for a month of games pass with it, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and several other hot new single player titles you'd have to hate your money to do otherwise as a consumer. Difficult for developers to profit.

For the Xbox platform division, hitting 30% profit margins has required a drastic rethink. For individual games, it's not a completely unrealistic target... except they're all released day-one on Xbox Game Pass, cannibalizing sales. Much more in the story www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I've been a big dweeb who's read lots of manga (very legally) online before now, so it feels very special to finally own a complete physical edition to enjoy. At first I thought Delicious in Dungeon was just an excuse to draw food, but it evolved into one of my favourite stories. Give it a try too!
