Text: Niozene has never been good enough.

As daughter and crown heir to the Mother, a living goddess and ruler of her country, perfection is the only standard she’s ever known. Yet, despite her flawless scholar’s education and a polished career as a ranger, Niozene has failed to convince the Mother to look past her greatest flaw—she lacks the holy power to control the minds of others that ordains her family as living gods with divine right to rule.

When a shape-changing assassin nearly kills the Mother on Niozene’s watch, she is stripped of her titles and given an ultimatum: return with the assassin’s head, or face excommunication from both her homeland and the afterlife. Desperate, she accepts the task as a final chance to prove herself and show the Mother she deserves a place as her daughter.

Allowed only the help of Sonsan, a surly tracker and criminal also facing excommunication, Niozene dreads that she may have lost her chance at redemption before she has even left home. But when Sonsan reveals that he shares the same strange shape-changing power as the assassin, Niozene realizes his assignment to accompany her is more than coincidence. As they track the assassin deep into a forbidden land, confronting demons, ancient magic, and the ghosts that haunt their dreams and blood, they must uncover the truth behind their quest—and the buried history neither knew they shared—if they wish to live to see their promised redemption.

When provided with the opportunity to steal a necklace containing immeasurable magic, hedge witch Blake Delacroix must decide whether to accept the life society has laid out for her or steal the power she has always been denied. #bluepit #Q #YA #LGBT #F

An image of a castle surrounded by forest. VEILED ENCHANTMENTS. YA FANTASY WITH DARK ACADEMIA AND SAPPHIC RIVALS TO LOVERS. COMLPETE AT 80,000 WORDS.

The blurb:

Seventeen-year-old Blake has spent her life studying magic at Holtsworth Academy with the hope of joining the ranks of the Royal Corps, an elite infantry comprised of divine witches descended from the gods. There’s only one problem: Blake isn’t a divine witch at all.

As niece of the headmistress, she is confined to the role of assistant and silent observer of the extraordinary lessons unfolding around her, her own negligible powers denying her full participation.

A spark of hope arrives when Blake learns that the Grandwitch has brought a secret necklace containing a volatile and immeasurable magic to the academy. Just as she finds a way to obtain it for herself, the necklace disappears and Blake believes she knows exactly who to blame: Maeve Moram, a powerful student who has always had it in for her.

What begins as a quest to recover the necklace results in Blake unearthing not only the hidden truth of her fellow hedge witches but also a deeper and darker power that she can’t begin to comprehend.

Comp Titles:

Every Exquisite Thing by Laura Steven (sapphic romance, rivals to lovers, generational trauma)

Wisteria by Adalyn Grace (familial relationships, lost deities, gothic-lite)

Snippet:

“It all comes so easy to you, and you don’t even deserve it.” I scoff. “Do you think the Corps would have selected you if your mother wasn’t Lady Death? I bet Adrien only sticks around to take the attention away from him being one of the Dregs.”

It can be hard to remember just how far down the gods’ bloodline he is when he’s lording it over me. But there is no forgetting just how close Maeve is to the power of Death herself.

“Where I get my magic from doesn’t matter.” She steps so close that I can feel her breath on my skin. Her eyes are slits, her teeth bared. “All that matters is that I have it – and if people want to make use of it, who are you to say otherwise? Just because you hate how small you are. How weak. You must drown in it.”

A moodboard for my sci-fi horrormance WIP, BABEL ON CALLISTO. On the top left is a glowing humanoid figure with a planet and rings orbiting its head. In the center, white glitchy text reads: "NOT ALL ENDINGS ARE THE END. SOMETIMES THEY ARE THE BEGINNING," repeated multiple times. Beneath that, a figure walks into a starry void shaped like another person, reaching toward each other. Other elements include a flatworm floating in a grid-like space, a silhouetted couple reaching toward each other in a virtual tunnel, and hands weaving a glowing galaxy-like thread.

As the crown heir to the Mother, the living goddess that rules her country, perfection is not merely a goal; it is the base expectation, and one she’s never been able to live up to. Her flawless scholar’s education and polished career as a ranger have failed to convince the Mother to look past her greatest mistake: she was born without the holy power that grants her family their divine right to rule.

Allowed only the help of another excommunicated criminal, a surly, aged tracker named Sonsan, and facing an assassin who could be anyone, she dreads she has lost her chance to return home before she has even left. But when Sonsan reveals the same shape-changing power as the assassin, she realizes there is more to her quest than she has been told. As they chase the assassin deep into a forbidden land, they must confront the buried history they discover they share, as well as the ghosts that haunt their dreams and blood, if they are to return alive.
