In case you’re wondering, Spider Man Brand New Day is outstanding

Professor of Chemistry at the University of California at Merced; Currently serving as Interim Dean of the School of Natural Sciences... officially unofficial... opinions may be the ravings of a mad Titan / PI. He/His
I’d rather just purchase $69 of baked beans to eat

Has anyone in California actually read the text of Prop 38 on the ballot this Fall? It is incredibly sus and I’ve only just learned about it… but happy to learn more!
I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.

God, England are dire… so much talent, so little entertainment
*sigh* - the eternal dilemma... ignore an email or reply honestly (when there is likely no upside to providing my response)?
This is the nerdiest shit ever… and I love it!
This is the most exciting thing that’s ever happened on Bluesky. And I was here for it.
not sure we still do this anymore as the research in higher education world collapses around us... but, hey look, we did a thing... up on the preprint server now (and hopefully coming to a peer-reviewed journal soon) chemrxiv.org/doi/full/10....

Wait... is this an elaborate prank by Italo Calvino!? #IYKYK
Now that's a hell of a mix up
"The RPG embodies a distinctively American policy...decentralization, competition, bottom-up initiative. Its virtues are structural; its vices are accretions of practice. The 1st would be diluted by major reallocation toward institutional funding; the 2nd can be addressed by deliberate reform"
In (qualified) defense of the research project grant
In a debate that has been building for years, a growing coalition of reformers has concluded that the research project grant (RPG) approach used by many science funders in the United States and based ...

I've been collecting GC and GC-MS instruments like you wouldn't believe... my Fall project is getting them all back into working order, with the major caveat that I've never laid hands on the insides of a mass spec!
Well I never really updated the inherited EPR saga because I got pneumonia and 87 other things happened and now it’s June. Anyways we have spent the last few months trying to figure out a Haskris chiller for it and then we had to have another 208 V receptacle installed.
...am I the only one taking note of all the folks that have now started referring to being supported by the "Department of War" sure in the knowledge that once sanity is (somewhat) restored they will all quietly go back to calling it the "Department of Defense"? It's the small things.
