Just walked the dog and was wondering why I didn't see a single person. And there's hardly any cars on the road. It's like we're back in the early covid lockdown days. I was confused until I opened the newspaper and saw the overpaid people are kicking a ball around again. Ah.

Fantastic hike around Borebreen on our last day. A polar bear was spotted in the water this morning, but I missed it. A reason to come back, I guess.

Overlooking Adventdalen, with Longyearbyen and the Advent fjord at the end. Behind me, up on the mountain, Mine 7 (the last Norwegian coal mine to close in 1025) and the EISCAT radar station. Sadly the road was closed past where we stopped, so we couldn’t go all the way to the radars.

A bunch of common eiders (and some barnacle geese) made their nesting site right next to a husky kennel outside Longyearbyen. The Arctic foxes don’t like the dogs, so their nests are safer there. They were used to people.

Getting my bearings in Svalbard, where I’ll spend the next week on the 100+ year old schooner Noorderlicht up along the Western coast. Until departure: stout from the northernmost brewery in the world; all the museums in Longyearbyen; wildlife photo safari. And snow buntings, so pretty. Good stuff.

Last week I had surgery in Oslo - not a major one, but required full anaesthesia and all. Today I got the bill in the mail - 518 Norwegian kroner. This is one of the reasons I’m happy to pay my taxes here.
