The 7:84 (Scotland) Theatre company had a tremendous impact on a generation of Irish actors, directors and writers. For Ollie Jennings, who promoted several of their Galway performances in the 1970s, they had ‘energy, swagger, and a political message … their singing made their shows accessible, and their mix of socialism and entertainment was infectious.’

Taking their name from a statistic of the time (7% of the people own 84% of the wealth), the company took their drama through the highways and lowlands of Scotland, before taking Ireland by storm in 1974, with their radical “ceilidh-play” prompted by the discovery of the North Sea oilfield, The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black, Black Oil.

Speaker, Dr Andrew Newby, is a specialist in Scottish-Irish comparative history.

The second speaker, archivist Kieran Hoare, will introduce one of the University’s major archival collections: that of John Arden and Margaretta D’Arcy, authors of such classic works of Irish theatre as The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1975) and The Ballygombeen Bequest (1972).

The Irish Centre for the Histories of Labour and Class Seminar this week marks the launch of Kieran Devenish's 'Factory Life in Industrial Yarns, Bray' (Four Courts, 2025) & the 50th volume of Saothar. Speakers include Kieran Devenish and Laurence Marley. O'Donoghue Centre, Wed 26 Nov. 4.15pm.
