In the parlance of our times…

The oldest daughter, working her way through grad school by (checks notes) slinging merch for the Savannah Bananas. I guess that beats what I had to do. Kids have it so easy.

A tall blond female, wearing a blue Banana Ball tee shirt, in front of a baseball field.

The place is Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play. It is set up for baseball. The Savannah Bananas take their show on tour, and ask local college students to help with ticket sales and merch. She won’t be rich, but after 2 days of slinging tees she’ll make enough for food and incidentals for a couple weeks. Not bad for grad school.

White’s Bay, Lake Ontario. Henderson NY. Where I’ve spent part of my summers for the last 30 years. My daughters learned to sail here, and one is now a sail instructor. We’ve travelled all around the lake, across to Kingston and Ottawa and west to Niagara. Wouldn’t trade it.

Late morning view. Protected bay, no waves. Blue skies and blue waters. Sackett’s Harbor center left on the horizon. From the waterline. Cool and clear. From the waterline. How can you beat this? Actual lakeside view, Westcott’s (I think). Flat sandy beach, and you can walk out 100 yards before your belly gets wet when the weather is like this.

My new (to me) Martin HD28. Man what a boomer! Love these herringbones. Just back from the shop for fretwork and a new nut. I replaced the bridge pins with bone (properly seated) and swapped the pixelated pickguard for a Holter. More in alt text.

A Martin guitar. Dreadnought shape. The color is light amber, with a brown swirl pickguard. The bridge is ebony and white bone pins with abalone dots.

This being secondhand from a dealer, I don’t really know the history. But I can guess. The first 5 frets had significant wear, but the rest of the frets were pristine. The neck is smooth. The headstock has a tan line where a string strap lived. The back has a stain in the finish, I think from sweat. There are chips in the binding finish. This guitar belonged to a singing cowboy who gigged.

There isn’t a pickup, with no indication it ever had one. Fairly certain it’s had a neck reset, which isn’t a surprise due to its age and the strap placement.

There is a center line crack below the bridge. The repair seems like a skilled amateur job - the cleats inside are well done, but the finish is blotchy and uneven.

New radio in the daughter’s Escape. Replacing the horrible Ford Sync that did a lot nothing very well. Cheap Amazon find replacement with everything you can ask for. Were the instructions bad? Yes. Did I break anything? No. Does it work? Yes.

A dashboard in pieces. In all fairness, everything I needed was in the box except clear instructions. YouTube to the rescue! All in all not bad for $170. A little bit of cutting non-structural plastic to accommodate wiring routing. I was surprised when the music I was playing on my outside speaker was suddenly playing inside the car.
It lives! Fairly clean setup. Very clear and colorful backup camera. This is the Ford factory installed camera tied into the new radio. Below is the old CD player slot. It now being empty, and with nothing to put in it, I used it for the mic and the 2 USB ports that came with the radio. Not sure where else I could put them without cutting or drilling.

My band is playing on Sunday, June 7 from 1-4 by the water in Occoquan, VA. This is for the annual Riverfest and Craft show. We’ll be set up behind D’Roccos next to the beer/wine/liquor vendors, which sounds like excellent planning! See you there!

A blue/green background with a photo in the middle of 2 men playing guitars on a concrete patio. At the top of the page are the logos for Derelict Dog, D’Roccos restaurant, and Riverfest. Below that are the words “Derelict Dog” and “Acoustic Rock”. At the bottom is the address 301 Mill St, Occoquan Historic District, Virginia. 7 June, 2026 1-4 PM

Today’s verse comes from pp 63 & 64, St Catherine of Sweden. While I haven’t the ingredients for a “Hart” (gin, Dubonnet and vermouth), I will probably have an Old Fashioned or 2 to atone. Amen.

A book titled Drinking with the Saints: The Sinner’s Guide to a Holy Happy Hour, by Michael P Foley. Each day features the daily saint, a synopsis of the saints’ life, and a recommended drink to celebrate the saint or the day. Sometimes liquors, sometimes beers, often times both. The cocktails include recipes, which is a nice touch.

My acoustic duo Derelict Dog will be bringing the heat to Water’s End Brewery in Lakeridge VA on Saturday March 21. If you’re in NOVA and looking for some post St Patrick’s adventures, come see us! Get a Damn Beer, a Hot Damn Pretzel, and listen to some damn fine tunes! We have a few surprises…
