It has been an amazing experience, teaching our next generation about the wonderfull freshwater fishes in Portugal and the big threat the invasive fish! Thanks to great Fish Invasions Lab team!! #silurus #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
Ontem recebemos 52000 folhetos sobre peixes invasores em rios de Portugal, com destaque para a perca-europeia #percafluviatilis um projecto financiado pelo #fundoambiental @marescience.bsky.social
Another #LIFEPREDATOR action with park rangers from #ICNF and #GNR operationals. We have trained our colleagues to fish Identification and fish sampling. These actions will improve our enforcement on anglers. @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social
Yesterday, we did a training course for environmental surveillance forces (#GNR & #ICNF), aiming to improve anglers' enforcement actions preventing the spread of the invasive #silurusglanis in PT. #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social
Our work on the news!
🌊⚠️ Invasive species spreading in the Tagus basin 🐟 Researchers from MARE have identified a rapid spread of European perch (Perca fluviatilis) in the Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve and throughout the Tagus basin. Find out more 👇 www.mare-centre.pt/pt/perca_tejo @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
The others are finishing up the annual survey of the Tagus River. It has been 9 years and 12 stations along the 120km of river. GO TEAM!!! @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
It has been a busy week! While some of us are going to Schools for the #LIFEPREDATOR outreach programme @lifeprogramme.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @marescience.bsky.social
The LIFE-PREDATOR project was at the IV meeting of the Movimento Douro, held this past weekend in Lousada. The European-catfish has already invaded the entire section of the Douro river & lacks of a monitoring program. @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social

Our Operative Team in Meimoa reservoir working hard to remove the invasives, european catfish and european perch. These two species dominate now the fish communities in this reservoir. @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @marescience.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social #LIFEPREDATOR
New Publication in The Journal of Fish Biology! "Hidden in the gut: Metabarcoding reveals overlooked predation by the invasive European catfish (Silurus glanis)" onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
Last weekend, the #LIFEPREDATOR project donated 350kg of the invasive catfish #silurus to the Festival Raizes Vivas in Santarém. Organized by chef rodrigocastelo, participants tried several catfish dishes... @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social
Last Friday, we had a blast at European Researchers Night! In 2 different locations, we alert people about the impact of the invasive European catfish in Portugal #silurusglanis #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social @lifeprogramme.bsky.social
The invasives European-catfish & carp thrive in PT reservoirs. Under the #LIFEPREDATOR project, our Operative Team removed about 400kg & 200kg of catfish and carp from a Natural Park, in 2 days, using gillnets mesh>90mm), with nearly 0 bycatches. @lifeprogramme.bsky.social @marescience.bsky.social
#lifepredator workshop aimed at knowledge transference about eDNA based techniques with case studies discussion looking at its potential on IAS detection and potential issues when using it "blindly". #silurus #catfish @lifeprogramme.bsky.social @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
European perch #percafluviatilis is an invasive fish in PT with high impact iberian fish! Unfortunately, new populations were found. Our work with law enforcement and stakeholders is enriching. Support comes from #fundoambiental @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
Wonderful (and worrying) paper by @fishinvasionslab.bsky.social on the diet of invasive Wels catfish, Silurus glanis. Notably, one in four catfish had consumed European eel, arguably contributing to recent worsening of its already poor status (see below) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
RECENT EEL DECLINE In A LARGE MEDITERRANEAN WETLAND The European eel is a Critically Endangered species since 2008, but its status is worsening fast New OA paper onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... Main, terrible findings, below @ebdonana.bsky.social @csic.es @nfranchv.bsky.social
Today at @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social and #esasantarem we had two seminars about the invasive catfish in Portugal. #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social
Last weekend, we participated on a debate in #Alandroal about using invasive fish in gastronomy. In PT inland areas this could be a way of environmental management, create jobs and enhance cirular economy in less developed regions. #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
This sunday, I was invited to a freshwater fish gastronomic festival in #Golegã! The winner was a Cataplana of catfish and crayfish (both invasives). This dish is done in a unique pot, closed and slow cooked typical from Portugal! #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
We started the week with two simultaneous outreach actions in two schools in the Lisbon area. Super nice to see the students enthusiasm about the native fish and concerned about the catfish invasion! #LIFEPREDATOR @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social #lifeprogramme
One of the main tasks of #LIFE-PREDATOR is to create operational teams composed by professional fishermen! We had a meeting with several to explain our objectives but also hear their concerns regarding #silurus impact on their business. @marescience.bsky.social @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social
Our work highlighted by @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social !
