Weather word(s) of the week: freezing rain and sleet. There are several forms of winter precipitation, and sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. Freezing rain is liquid rain that freezes on contact with a surface. Sleet is rain that freezes into ice pellets before reaching the ground.

A study led by the European Severe Storms Laboratory provides the first comprehensive global analysis of very large hail. The study found that northern Argentina was the global hotspot for very large hail events, followed by Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, the U.S. Great Plains, & South Africa.

Weather word of the week: graupel. Graupel are soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets (at a temperature below 32°F) freeze onto a snow crystal, a process called riming. If the riming is particularly intense, the rimed snow crystal can grow to an appreciable size. - NOAA

Florida has officially been dethroned as the lightning capital of the U.S. AEM, with the help of its 1800 sensor lightning detection network, announced that one of the Great Plains states had the highest concentration of lightning in 2025, with ~73 lightning flashes per square mile last year.
