West Philadelphia. TTRPG blogger at forlornencystment.blogspot.com. pine nuts on top. very jiggy.

I converted Dungeon Module B1: In Search of the Unknown to Into the Oddish! I present Pokémodule B1: In Search of the Unown. This post details the upper level of the Caverns of Quagsqueton. Can the player Pokémon claim the long lost Brain & Brawn Badges? #TTRPG #IntotheOddish

Pokémodule B1: In Search of the Unown (an Adventure for Into the Oddish), Upper Level of the Caverns of Quagsqueton

Many years ago, rumor has it, two noted Pokémon trainers in the area, Rogahn the Blackbelt (a Fighting-type trainer of renown) and Zelligar ...

I finally took a dive into a section of the AD&D DMG I've been neglecting: Combat! I discuss Gygax's musings about hit points & saving throws, examples of combat, & some handy rules for morale, evasion & pursuit, psionics, lingering injuries, intoxication, & more. #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

AD&D DMG Slush: Combat

While I have discussed the AD&D DMG in great length on this blog , my interest has largely been in interpreting the general feel of the game...

In the 14th session of our B1 campaign, the party spends time in town planning their next expedition to Quasqueton: connecting with the local smugglers, recruiting henchmen, & purchasing a boat! They get insanely lucky with a treasure roll & a few of them level up. Crime pays! #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

I talk about Dungeon Module B4: The Lost City, in which the player characters are lost in the desert and must rely on the dungeon for shelter & survival. Does the set up work? What complications are introduced to your game when you trap the player characters in the dungeon? #TTRPG #D&D #OSR

Lost in the Desert: Does Dungeon Module B4's Hook Work?

The setup for Dungeon Module B4: The Lost City is as follows: The player characters are traveling with a desert caravan when a sandstorm sep...

In the 13th session of our B1 campaign, the party returns to town to sell their loot. They encounter one of the settlement's powerful NPCs, deal with some annoying underlings, & learn that they should be careful when discussing their activities. #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

Play Report (AD&D 2e): In Search of the Unknown (Session 13)

Boars & wereboars are immune to (insinuative) poison! Giants are immune to the poisons of smaller creatures! Makes sense, though I wish there was something more like a rule of thumb, like a bonus/penalty for each size category larger/smaller the target is than the poisoning creature.

This is nifty. When intelligent monsters fail a morale check, the difference between what they needed to roll & what they actually rolled determines how the morale failure. Can I find a way to make this work with AD&D 2e's 2d10 roll under morale mechanic? 🤔

The first time a new player character listens at a door, if they succeed, they gain the benefit of being "keen-eared", which adds 5 or 10% to their chance of successfully listening at all other doors for the rest of the campaign (unless they suffer hearing loss later)! Quantum keen-earedness.

Weird tidbit: magic weapons which shed light foil ultravision the same way a heat source foils infravision - meaning that these weapons essentially blind users of ultravision outdoors at night. Unfortunately, the only monsters with ultravision are bone & ice devils.

I wrote about the AD&D Monster Manual's inclusion of monster noncombatants & children ("orc babies"), my thoughts about alignment & personhood in D&D, D&D's very dodgy history & double standards with these sorts of NPCs, & ultimately, why I like having them in my games. #TTRPGs #D&D #AD&D #OSR

What I Like About Orc Babies

This is a touchy subject, and I'll try my best to discuss it with care, but I want to talk about children in D&D - human children, halfling ...

In the final (?) post in my series on Developing the Sandbox, I lay siege to strongholds! They are settlement, dungeon, & monster lair, all in one. They support social intrigue, mass combat, & dungeon delving. How do the characters get inside, & what do they find within? #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

In the 12th session of our B1 campaign, the party finds the Stone That Speaks, encounters the Ghost of Quasqueton, & runs into some owlbears in the woods at night. Do not let WotC trick you into thinking owlbears are cute! They will knock your shit smooth off. #TTRGP #D&D #AD&D #OSR

I wrote another post for the randomness blog bandwagon! This one focuses on AD&D halflings & their dogs. Halflings love their dogs, & you should too! This post gives each a personality quirk & pairs them with a fully fleshed out halfling adult or child. #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

1d10 Halflings and their 1d4 Dogs

My goblin post was fun, and it gave me a hankering to do something similar with halflings. Why halflings? Well, mostly because I like that ...

In the 11th session of our B1 campaign, the party gets their hands on *real* treasure. Wall hangings! Taxidermy! Statues! Pelts! Entire doors! How much is it worth? How much does it weigh? How many people need to carry it? How long does it take to move? Read to find out! #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR

Continuing my series on developing the sandbox. This time, monster lairs! They can be home to one leprechaun, a clan of ogres, an entire community of elves, or anywhere in between. A "monster" is anything that isn't you, & a "lair" is anywhere it lives! #TTRPG #D&D #AD&D #OSR
