My extremely tired take is that we need to make toddlerism illegal in order to fully eliminate it and sustain a democratic way of life. Once you are past a certain age, liking toddler things gets you sent to a UN-run international penal colony for a terminal case of baby brain.

This thinking is too small-scale. The big question haunting many (me) is: does any Balkan country have a right to call itself something other than Rumelia? It might not solve underlying problems, but it will be tremendously successful at two things: consistency and being extremely fucking funny.

"Does Northern Macedonia have a right to call themselves Macedonia?" - a question haunting many candidates.

Mostly true if Kaldellis hadn't released The New Roman Empire in 2023, the definitive work by quite some margin. Treadgold's book is phenomenal, especially for the time--don't get me wrong--but the scholarship has evolved massively since. He's also notorious for making up all sorts of statistics.

I think the best book on the history remains A History of the Byzantine State and Society by Treadgold. It is exhaustive and covers everything from Diocletian to fall of the empire.
