These will have proper room for bikes (the part I'm most excited about). You have no idea how hard it is to get a bike on board old trains, let alone find room for it inside where it isn't a nuisance.

Managed to get a look at the new Škoda fleet we're getting to replace trains as old as 1969 (I know, lol). They're still doing tests on these, but hopefully, all of them will be up and running by the end of the year.

I've never driven or owned a car, and I don't intend for this to ever change.

Mostly true if Kaldellis hadn't released The New Roman Empire in 2023, the definitive work by quite some margin. Treadgold's book is phenomenal, especially for the time--don't get me wrong--but the scholarship has evolved massively since. He's also notorious for making up all sorts of statistics.

I think the best book on the history remains A History of the Byzantine State and Society by Treadgold. It is exhaustive and covers everything from Diocletian to fall of the empire.
