Pagan sword-fighting dad who writes, rides a motorcycle, teaches math, and explores labyrinths. He/Him, BFC

I saw some parallels between I.33 and The Flower of Battle this summer, when I taught classes on them back to back. When I posted on a Reddit HEMA forum about it, most of the responses had a flavor of, "No, and you're stupid for even thinking this." (Only one person ACTUALLY called me stupid.)

I made the mistake of replying to someone who has a large count of followers who believe very strongly something that I only believe a little strongly. I tried to reply to the counter-arguments, but there are too many people who think I'm a jerk for expressing nuance. I deleted my post.

I expressed to one of my best friends that I'm a little sad not to be as nerdy as some other people because I spend so much time exercising that I could spend doing nerdy things. I'm going to keep exercising, but it makes me sad when I compare myself to nerdier nerds.

My old boss got promoted, but she was in my school again talking to my new boss. When she saw me she made a point to talk about how good a teacher I am. I didn't know what to say, so I told the story about how I accidentally converted a student to satanism and how good that was for her spiritually.

I remember when I realized this, back in third grade. Yes, I AM weird. Thank you for noticing! Would you like to hear a story about how rocks forgot how to speak? Or play D&D with me? Or invent a fantasy card game together because Magic: the Gathering won't come out for another 3 years?

Your daily affirmation: Being called weird is a badge of honor, but you can be weirder still. Don't hold back.

The lawyers are just arguing over details now. Soon my sword class will have its own space. A space where my swords don't need to be hidden in a closet. A space that I don't have to fight with anyone else to use. A space with big windows so people will drive by and say, "Are they sword-fighting?"

A lot of people talk about how awful Mondays are, and how much they look forward to Fridays. Today and yesterday are the best I've felt in the morning for a month, now that we are back into the school year. I'm energized and ready to go. Friday is fine, but I love Mondays.

I have informed my oldest son, on his first day in a new school, that he is to have stories about how awesome his day was. If it was entirely a bad day, he's allowed to make things up. I'm looking forward to stories about dragons and wizards invading the school.

I'm back to working on my "Tarot with More Swords In It" project. I am redoing The High Priestess so that she is sneaking BEHIND the armored hulks of Boaz and Jachim. This is taking forever! Why are faces so hard to draw!? And a hand that is holding a scroll instead of the dagger in her left hand?

A lot of people showed up for me, but none of them were able to be the person I needed as a child. The hardest part of being a high school teacher is acknowledging that I, personally, cannot be the person that everyone needs. I can help many, maybe even most, but I am not the right person for all.

Description: an adult is holding up a structure made out of broken does to protect a child. The adult has a light where zir heart should be.

My goal for today's workout was 11,000 lbs. (Today is high weight/low reps day.) I missed that goal by almost 2000 lbs, but that is primarily because I added 20lbs (8%) to my deadlift and cut my reps from last week in half. This was still a good workout, despite the low number at the end.

I saw a sign that said "Kingdom Bridge Church," but I thought it said "Kingdom Bridge Combat." Now I want a bridge combat facility to exist. Just bridges with foam pits under them for me to swordfight on. 8 Bridges should suffice.

I was a little worried about the viking era swordsmanship class I taught at the regional Thing last week. But the class went well. There were enough swords so everyone got one that they liked to hold. A college professor asked if I would give that same talk at his university.

I got to do my astrology party trick several times this weekend, where you tell me your sun and your rising and I tell you when you were born within 2 hours. About half the times I tried it, though, they didn't know what an ascendant WAS, so I did it backwards and told them their ascendant.

I was cornered several times last night by very drunk people who wanted to say nice things to me. Strangely, the fact that they were so drunk made it easier to take their compliments. Normally it makes me feel uncomfortable when people say nice things about me, but they were too drunk for guile.

Preparing for the Transitions class I'll be running this fall, I observed one of the adult HEMA programs in the area tonight. I wasn't sure if I would be participating or just watching, but I brought my safety gear just in case. I did no sword-fighting and I have 10 pages of notes to type up.
