Space Weather A minor G1 geomagnetic storm is in progress. Aurora may be visible down to upper mid-latitudes before the moon rises (before midnight), assuming you have a clear sky and if the Bz swings negative (it's currently positive at +8nT). Substorms may cause local auroral enhancements.

Space Weather A large west-side filament eruption that erupted yesterday (28 Sept) has produced a solar storm that will cause us a glancing blow in a few days. Additionally, the fast solar wind from a large trans-equatorial coronal hole will become geo-effective in three to four days.

UK & Ireland Grid Monitor The grid monitor received another update today to fix a fault with Rep of Ireland power cuts reporting. New features also allow mouse over notes, giving details for each power cut on the map, and a new plot showing "customers off by operator".

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

NASA’s New Horizons mission may shut down two instruments over lack of funding

Space Weather Sudden Storm Commencement: The DST (Disturbance Storm Time Index) spiked to +24nT at 13h UT, suggesting imminent geomagnetic storm conditions, which could follow within hours. The solar wind density is gradually increasing, but is still quite low.

Space Weather CME arrival: The first CME in a potential series has arrived overnight - somewhat earlier than predicted. IMF Bz is strongly southward and substorms are now hitting polar regions. HF radio will be degraded at high latitude and polar regions - aurora is possible.

Space Weather Incoming Solar Storms: In recent days several active regions on the sun have launched many CMEs (coronal mass ejections). Only a small number of these appear to be Earth-directed. AR4520 launched an M1.0 flare which produced yesterday's high-energy proton storm.
