When I first showed this figure to colleagues, they were horrified. But I think it adequately shows how confusing the marine CO₂ removal (mCDR) landscape is, and this figure will eventually be the most important contribution of this paper. 🌊

mCDR approaches have been categorized in different ways: (a) biotic, abiotic; (b) photosynthetic, geochemical, technological; (c) novel, conventional; (d) nature-based solution (NbS) or not. We reconcile these different frameworks here. What we consider NbS might be controversial. 7/n

Based on discussions with colleagues at COP, I am concerned about this push for ocean fertilization and sinking seaweed initiatives. Marine carbon dioxide removal in these forms is illegal unless guaranteed that there would be no negative impacts on ocean biodiversity, which can't be done. So why?!
