Thank you so much for hosting #Sumluv. It's been so fun and inspiring, and I'm now very invested in everyone's fictional couples!! As I'm still querying, I'm mainly looking to build my profile right now, so if you could follow me and/or like my pinned post that would be great! 🥰
I want to thank you all for some great conversations and connections this month. It's truly been wonderful to see everyone chatting and being excited for and supportive of one another 🧡 Let's keep the #SumLuv train going: drop your links, follow some new friends, catch up on some prompt replies 🧡
I'm currently querying COVENANT so fingers crossed! In the meantime I'm drafting a new WIP, which is an adult romantasy Little Mermaid retelling. Think deep sea horror as a trans metaphor, toxic M/M romance, BDSM, fictional Italy, anti-monarchy sentiments, and a giant squid. #SumLuv
So...where's this going, #SumLuv ?? 🧡 What's next for you and your work? If you've been chatting about a WIP, what's the plan for it when it's finished? What's your next project? Are you waiting on any news? Will we stay like this forever? 🧡
I love emotional angst, but I'm also a big softie. I think the reason I enjoy a HEA so much is because you can really dig deep into a character's insecurities and struggles while knowing that in the end, everything will work out for them and their relationship. #SumLuv
Do you have a favorite variation on the HEA? #SumLuv No need to spoil your own work unless you want to chat about it There are some who might say a HEA is essential to the romance genre. Do you agree?
I have many because there's a lot of yearning going on, but this one from Darshil’s POV is probably my fave. It was inspired by the Oscar Wilde line "the curves of your lips rewrite history". #SumLuv
#SumLuv One of my mushier lines 🧡
Oooh I love this one. Rowan and Darshil aren't jealous often in COVENANT, as neither is a very jealous person. However, there is one scene where I really wanted to use jealousy in a fun way. One of my fave spicy tropes is "character watches their love interest kiss someone else and (1/2) #SumLuv
Swoony and darkly possessive? Anxious and insecure? A healthy dose of something natural to work through? Not explored at all? If not, what do you explore instead? #SumLuv 🧡
Favourite books in my sub genre: 🐦⬛ The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles ✨️ A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske ⚔️ The Everlasting by Alex E. Harrow 🇬🇧 Boyfriend Material/Husband Material/Father Material by Alexis Hall (1/2) #SumLuv
#SumLuv 🧡
YES! Rowan is a tall, hot, androgynous goth with eyeliner, rings, and good fashion, and he's adventurous and fun but also secretly romantic. Even in his cynical hedonist stage, he still cares deeply for his friends and family. As the love interest, Darshil was designed to be hot and (1/2) #SumLuv
If they were datable, and available, would YOU date them? What qualities in them make that more or less likely to happen? #SumLuv 🧡
Darshil falls first. Rowan falls harder. The middle is where the big pining happens. After lots of fighting, they declare a truce and agree to be friends, which causes all the suppressed feelings to emerge. Darshil, while still in denial about his sexuality, is a hopeless romantic (1/2) #SumLuv
and is there pining? please tell me there's pining 🙏 #SumLuv 🧡
As I've mentioned this scene a lot in my SumLuv posts and shared a tiny bit but not the full thing, I went with the corset tying scene! CW: I would say this falls between the "squee" and "🥵" categories. No actual sex, but sexual implications and descriptions. Hyped to read everyone's snips!! #SumLuv
Show us a point where you turn it up to eleven: a moment of over-the-top romance, of uber-sweetness, or hawt hawt spice! Take some time to react to other snippets 🧡 #SumLuv (knowing a variety of people will be browsing this one, please be considerate with your CWs)
I think it would be a good balance! Rowan would get along with my friends from the vogue and drag scenes and also my goth friends, while Darshil would bond with my more bookish friends. I could see us all going thrifting together or maybe taking Darshil to his first ever Pride. #SumLuv
A silly one today about how your characters might behave in the "real" world, and how "real" people might react to them #SumLuv
When I draft books, I usually only have about 70% of the plot/character journeys planned because it's only when I start writing prose that I can really dig deep. I knew Rowan started out cynical, self destructive, and closed off, and knew what I wanted to say with his journey, but (1/2) #SumLuv
Did you always expect their story to play out the way it has? Is there anything about the story you had to change to accommodate this romantic relationship? #SumLuv
In COVENANT, I wanted to do a take on the experienced x virgin trope that isn't just "the feminine one is a virgin and sex is viewed as claiming". Rowan is promiscuous because he uses sex as an unhealthy coping mechanism. Darshil is inexperienced because he was taught by Victorian (1/2) #SumLuv
Sometimes characters meet at very similar stages of their lives, but sometimes there's a mismatch—in age, in life experience, in background, in sexual appetite... Are your characters as worldly as each other? Does their baggage make a matched set, or do they need help carrying some? #SumLuv
💜 Because COVENANT is second chance, I had a really fun time playing with chemistry. Every physical touch, however tiny, can remind them of the night they spend together, which theyre both trying to forget. 💜 I also love playing with clothing as chemistry because Victorian outfits are #SumLuv (1/3)
How do you show that your characters have "it", have that somethin-somethin, that spark, that je ne sais quoi between them? It's not just finding each other hot, though that's big. It's that other thing... That... 🧡chemistry🧡 remember content warnings for spicy snips, please #SumLuv
Resharing some of my Questpit graphics for COVENANT, my gothic gaslamp romantasy pitched as A MARVELLOUS LIGHT meets PENNY DREADFUL. Because it's the summer of love, I've included info about my 2 main couples (second chance gay couple and friends to lovers sapphic couple) 💜👻🕯🌑 #SumLuv #amquerying
Let's get pitchy with it, #SumLuv 🧡 I wanna get hype seeing you get hype about your project If you don't have a pitch deck or a book trailer, that's totally cool! Write us a 🔥 one-liner with all the bold, precise, exciting language you can fit in it and edit up your favorite excerpt 😍
In COVENANT, Rowan is deeply afraid to love again due to past traumas. He pushes Darshil away repeatedly, claiming their hook-up meant nothing and that he doesn't do feelings. Darshil is afraid of his sexuality and has to overcome his internalised shame as well as his misconceptions (1/2) #SumLuv
Even the coziest of romances has some tension, some aspect between them that must be unlocked over the course of the story to bring them closer Is there some insecurity or some misunderstanding that must be overcome? Perhaps there is a very literal plot machination keeping them separate #SumLuv 🧡
COVENANT: On a plot level, they share a vision of the apocalypse and realise their dreams are connected. On a personal level, Rowan admires Darshil's passion, open heart, and warmth. Darshil admires Rowan’s confidence and authenticity, and how he encourages these things in Darshil. #SumLuv
Tomorrow we'll chat about what keeps them apart Today, I want to know what brings them together! What do they find intriguing or admirable in the other, maybe despite circumstances? What keeps them from simply being strangers in each other's stories? #SumLuv 🧡
I would best describe a lot of the COVENANT spice as "this isnt gay sex, but absolutely is gay sex" in the same way the tennis from Challengers is sex. Below we have 1) Watching Rowan kiss someone else 2) Corset tying 3) Sharing a cigar 4) Doing dream magic together All gay sex #SumLuv #amquerying
"Closed door" "high spice" "🌶️🌶️🌶️" YAWN! We can get a little more creative with describing the amount and explicitness of physical affection and sex in our works, so tell me: are you on the ridge of a volcano, or the top of icy Mt. Everest? Hit us with your metaphors 🧡 #SumLuv
I love a song prompt! Here's some songs that I think sum up COVENANT's hook-up to enemies to begrudging allies to friends to lovers arc: Rowan: 💜 How to Be a Heartbreaker - MARINA 💜 Night Sweats - Findlay 💜 Perfect Stranger - FKA twigs 💜 Yuck - Charli xcx 💜 Nauseous - Conan Gray (1/3) #SumLuv
Is there a specific song in your text that is "theirs" or that plays a role in their romantic feelings? Alternatively, is there a song that reminds you of their dynamic? #SumLuv
This is a fun prompt! There's 2 ways you could take COVENANT 1) In his backstory, Rowan (the mc) attends University and has a relationship with a different character, so you could definitely make COVENANT a dark academia or contemporary romance story. Maybe the molly-house meetcute (1/3) #sumLuv
Kind of a silly one today. Could you change subgenres for this story? Have you?? Would it drastically change the story? What would be the funniest romantic subgenre to swap your characters into? 🧡🧡 #SumLuv
I write speculative romance! I find it makes the romance even more exciting because it gives you a whole new set of stakes to work with. I love it when the overarching fantasy plot and outside threats push the characters to address their own feelings. #SumLuv (1/2)
The romance umbrella is beautiful and broad, as evidenced by all of you! 🧡🧡🧡 Why is it fun or interesting—or challenging, even—to tell a romance in your subgenre? Tomorrow I'll ask you about subgenres you didn't pick. Today I wanna hear about the one you did! #SumLuv
Favourite romance tropes! 🖤 Opposites attract 💜 Silly x uptight ☀️ Grumpy x sunshine ✨️ Painful yearning/slow burn 🛏 Only one bed/horse ⚔️ Homoerotic sword fighting 💔 Second chance 🤭 "Oh no we have to hide and now we are pressed together in this tiny cupboard" 👀 Enemies to lovers #SumLuv
I confess, I don't have a great grasp of the specific terms for romantic tropes (I know it when I see it lol) but, for better or worse, they are a good marketing tool. What about you? Do you love when There's Only One Bed? Not sure? Describe it! Maybe we can help you out #SumLuv
COVENANT is set in a fictional Victorian London. That era's combination of decadence and secrecy makes M/M romance so juicy. You get sexual awakenings, subtle hand touches, secret meetings, deep yearning...Plus the clothing is great (sexually charged corset tying scene anyone?) #SumLuv #amquerying
Sometimes it's a character unto itself in a romance! We have subgenre prompts coming up where we can chat more broadly about types of settings, so for now I would love to hear about your *specific* setting and why it's fun/interesting to write a romance in 🧡 #SumLuv
Mine was The Princess Diaries! I borrowed the whole series from my school library about 3 times when I was about 13. They were such fun reads! #SumLuv
Do you remember the first romance novel you read? Where did you get it from? 🧡 #SumLuv 🧡
💜COVENANT💜 Rowan finds Darshil endearing and attractive, while Darshil is fascinated by Rowan’s confidence and falls quickly despite being "straight". When Darshil tells Rowan he wants to rebel against his stifling life, Rowan suggests a harmless hook up. Darshil agrees. (1/2) #SumLuv #amquerying
Meet cutes don't have to be "cute"! They are a plot device 🧡 But! Let's talk about how they DO feel about each other early on! Is it fairytale love? Is it *lust* at first sight? Hate at first sight? All?? Snips here are welcome (always welcome if you want to answer anything with a snip) 🧡 #SumLuv
